MANILA, November 8, 2023 – Climate advocates and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Community hold parachute banner action in support of the Power Up campaign to amplify the urgency of climate solutions around the globe.
Additionally, this event commemorates the decade since the devastating landfall of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in November 2013, of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded, which wrought havoc upon the Philippines.
“This event powers advocates, workers, students, newcomers, and communities such as PUP to demonstrate solidarity and collective action, advocating for a just transition to a clean, renewable energy future. The demands are simple: to divest in fossil fuel projects and invest the excess profits into renewable energy. As it is crucial to shift to community-centered renewables ahead of COP28, urging governments and financial institutions to take action” said Ara Alejo, 350 Pilipinas Advocacy Officer
Power Up is an initiative led by 350.org and global partners. They are guided by the belief that the necessary tools, technology, and resources are available to facilitate a rapid and equitable shift to renewable energy systems.
“To limit global warming to 1.5°C, we face a challenging path that requires courage and innovation. The fundamental science of decarbonization sets a clear goal: reducing global net human-caused carbon dioxide emissions significantly by 2030. We’re in a race against time to secure a sustainable future,” said Norly Mercado, Asia Regional Director of 350.org.
“Paving a sustainable future requires the harmonious collaboration of institutions. With full support from PUP-Manila, the academe, civil society organizations, and the vibrant communities they serve we are cultivating the seeds of climate solutions, and powering a greener, equitable tomorrow” said Jimmy Fernando, Chief of PUP- Center for Environmental Studies
In November, global activists are rallying in towns and cities, urging world leaders to embrace climate solutions encompassing clean energy, justice, peace, and human rights.
On December 9, they will bring their momentum to COP28, highlighting the achievability of a world powered by equitable renewable energy. It’s time to shift away from fossil fuels and facilitate this necessary transformation.
