Green Energy Option Program

Explore the Philippine’s program on providing renewable option to bulk energy consumers

Renewable energy bridges the gap in terms of efficiency and access, making it more compatible with the geography of the many archipelagic countries in Asia. Its flexibility also allows the potential utilization of indigenous renewable energy sources unique to each region.

In the Philippines, greener options for our energy needs are available and we can therefore choose and continue to demand cleaner and renewable energy on our grids. One of the options available is the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP)

What is the Green Energy Option Program? (GEOP)

GEOP allows bulk energy consumers to source power directly from a renewable energy supplier over fossil-fuel resources.

The program is created through Republic Act No. 9513 or the Renewable Energy Act of 2008. Different sectors have switched through GEOP such as hotels, condominiums, schools, factories, offices, and other workplaces in Luzon and Visayas

Electric cooperatives and distribution utilities—such as Meralco in Luzon, VECO in Visayas, and Davao Light in Mindanao—source energy from a number of power plants where they have entered into supply agreements with. Most of these power plants are fossil fuel-based and mostly coal, and only a few from renewable energy power plants, such as solar, wind, and geothermal.

Being a captive market of these distribution utilities or electric cooperative means being supplied by energy mostly from fossil fuels. The problem is fossil fuels drive up electricity costs because they are imported and therefore vulnerable to global market price volatility, which are passed on to consumers. Continuing power outages also put weight on the power charges shouldered by consumers.

With GEOP, entities have the power to choose renewable energy over fossil fuels, allowing them to source 100% power directly from a renewable energy supplier. Your distribution utility will still supply power to you, but it will not come from their pool of supply from the power plants they have agreements with, instead, it will come from your chosen renewable energy supplier.

Who is eligible for the program?

The eligibility requires a peak demand of 100 kilowatts and above for the past 12 months, which roughly translates to an estimated average monthly billing of PhP 190,000.00

Distribution utilities are also mandated to inform you that you are eligible to participate in the program through your billing statements.

Ernesto Saw Jr from South Metro Transport Cooperative narrates their commitment in ensuring sustainability in transport through their application of a mechanism called the Green Energy Option Program. Their story emphasizes how shifting to the use of renewable energy in powering their electric fleets can save costs and ultimately lower carbon emissions. Additionally, the feature explores the benefits and challenges of the application – such as streamlining the process to ensure more entities can apply and access to renewable energy

The video feature aims to raise awareness of the Green Energy Option Program, a mechanism created through Republic Act No. 9513 or the Renewable Energy Act of 2008. It allows bulk energy consumers to source power directly from a renewable energy supplier over fossil-fuel resources.

What we have REalized: Maximizing the Green Energy Option Program

But climate action is more than just about addressing a crisis; it’s about seizing opportunities. We must not only aim to share the burdens of addressing climate change but also ensure that the benefits of our efforts are widely distributed. The path to a decarbonized future offers economic opportunities, energy security, and sustainable development. The Renewable Energy Law, which made GEOP possible, is a critical step toward achieving this vision.
