Casiguran Barangay Leaders Explore Renewable Energy Innovations at PUP Itech and 350 Pilipinas Learning Exchange

Manila, 23 October 20, 2025 –Punong Barangays from Casiguran, Aurora visited the Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Institute of Technology (PUP ITech) to learn firsthand how renewable energy (RE) can empower local communities toward resilience and sustainability.

The learning exchange, hosted by 350 Pilipinas, PUP ITech, and the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), aimed to inspire the members of the Liga ng mga Barangay of Casiguran to replicate community-owned renewable energy projects.

During the visit, Punong Baranggays toured solar charging stations being developed at the Institute, as well as prototypes of sustainable classroom projects. These are collaborative efforts by PUP students and faculty, with support from 350 Pilipinas, that demonstrate practical and cost-effective solutions for energy access.

Shifting away from fossil fuels can be achieved through projects that provide clean and reliable power sources tailored to the immediate needs of the university. Additionally, the visit offered insights into how barangays can replicate such projects to enhance adaptation and mitigation efforts—especially critical during emergencies or prolonged power outages.

By showcasing these renewable energy systems, we hope to help LGUs see that transitioning to clean energy is both achievable and beneficial for communities,” said Ogie Atadero, Energy Transition Campaigner of 350 Pilipinas. “With the expertise provided by ICSC, the technical skills honed by PUP, and the interest shown by Casiguran in exploring these innovations, we can set an example for other municipalities to include such initiatives especially, especially during budget planning to move forward with community-owned renewable energy projects, especially those closer to the capital.”

ICSC shared its extensive experience working with LGUs, highlighting successful renewable energy initiatives such as its program in Samar, which demonstrated how collaboration between communities and local governments can bring sustainable solutions to life. The session guided participants on proposal development, community engagement, and policy support to help transform ideas into implementable local projects.

Throughout the day, 20 Punong Baranggay (Barangay Captains) out of 24 total barangays—engaged in technical discussions, interactive demonstrations, and planning workshops. The activity culminated with a session dedicated to identifying next steps and commitments to pursue renewable energy initiatives in Casiguran.
