Environmental Defenders say Never Again to the Marcos-Duterte Alliance

No one wants to suffer the same disaster over and over again.

Filipinos have faced the deadliest and most disastrous years of their lives under the Marcos and Duterte dynasties.

Under the Marcos dictatorship, destructive projects such as the Chico, Kaliwa, Kanan, and Laiban Dams, Cellophil logging concession, and Bataan Nuclear Power Plant threatened the lives of hundreds of thousands of Filipinos and destroyed our forests. Thousands of Marcos’ critics and dissenters were murdered, jailed, and tortured.

Fast forward to the Duterte government, hundreds of environmental defenders continue to be killed in one of the world’s deadliest country for defenders. Millions have suffered through super typhoon disasters while large-scale mining runs rampant in our watersheds, aggravating floods and landslides.

With the dictator’s son, Bongbong Marcos, and the tyrant’s daughter, Sara Duterte, running respectively as president and vice-president in the upcoming elections, the Marcos-Duterte alliance threatens to return the same deadly and disastrous rule for the next six years.

As how the world stood with the people of the United States against the regime of Donald Trump, we enjoin the international community to stand in solidarity with Filipino environmental defenders operating in one of the most climate vulnerable and biodiversity-threatened countries of the world.

Together, let us rise up and defeat the fascist Marcos-Duterte alliance in the Philippines!
