Do you know about OhmConnect? It is a business that has a deal with PG&E, SCE, SDG&E and even Con Edison in New York. When power demands get very high, especially in the time when people are getting home after work, utilities have to fire up “peaker” plants just to cover the high demand for power for a short time. OhmConnect eliminates the need to do that by paying people to reduce their electricity use for an hour. (This is possible because they have 200,000 members.) They compare electricity used during the Ohm Hour with your use the previous ten days, and anything below the ten day average earns “Watts.” Watts can be traded in for cash or gift cards or other rewards. You can earn most by shutting everything down, or somewhat less by just using a tv or computer or light for reading during that time. They notify you via email of every Ohm Hour the day before, so you can plan. Ohm Hours occur most weeks, but not all; it depends on the electricity demand. Participating is a win for the climate, since peaker plants run on fossil fuels; and it’s a win for participants.
Steering Committee member Dan Chandler says, “when I joined 350 Humboldt in 2019 someone told me about Ohm-Connect, and I have been participating since then. So far I have collected $550 in cash.” Every once in a while they offer a special deal, giving new members a $12 smart plug and paying existing members for every new referral. This time they are paying $20 for the first referral, $30 for the second, and $50 for every referral after that. If you sign up using Dan’s referral code all the referral bonuses will go to 350 Humboldt. A third win!
Joining Ohm Connect and participating in Ohm Hours is nearly painless and does a lot of good. We hope that you will take the opportunity to sign up and use the referral code below to make a donation to 350 Humboldt.
