Writing a personal letter and sending it snail mail will sometimes be more effective than an email sign on, but if you are short of time signing petitions can be a quick way of letting decision-makers know your views. Most of the requests compiled below are of the petition or letter sign-on variety, but there are a couple that lend themselves especially well to personal letters.

VOTING – VOTE FORWARD

https://votefwd.org/campaigns

Sending letters to voters thanking them for voting in last election and encouraging them to vote again in upcoming elections.

Here is a video of Vote Forward’s research director describing how they measure effectiveness.

VOTING – POSTCARDS TO SWING STATES

There are just five weeks left until the June 8 Democratic primaries in New Jersey and Virginia. When more Democrats vote in the primary, more of them vote in November, as well. We can’t let Republicans take control in these states!

Please SIGN UP to write postcards to make sure Democrats come out and vote. We’ll send you the postcards, addresses and instructions for free. You provide $0.36 stamps and mail the cards.  A number of campaigns are available on the website.

With the help of volunteers like you, we wrote 21 million postcards in 2020, and we saw incredible results! Voters who receive handwritten postcards are significantly more likely to vote. You can help us keep New Jersey and Virginia blue!

PETITIONS

SIERRA CLUB

Representative Neguse, together with Reps. Lowenthal and Huffman, recently introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives (H.Res.69), calling on the federal government to establish a National Biodiversity Strategy. House Resolution 69 details policy recommendations to address the root causes of biodiversity loss, and creates a blueprint for effectively tackling the biodiversity crisis. Act today:

ENVIRONMENT AMERICA

With supporters like you by our side, we’ve delivered tens of thousands of petitions urging banks, oil companies and decision-makers alike to make the same pledge: protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

And our efforts have helped: The five largest banks in the country agreed not to fund drilling in the refuge, leasing from some of the largest oil companies has been absent, and the Biden administration paused new leases.

Now, we’re working to close the floodgates once and for all. Act now: https://environmentamerica.webaction.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/index.sjs?action_KEY=44155

SIERRA CLUB

The THRIVE Act is here to meet the moment. It’s an exciting and transformative legislation introduced last week in Congress that combines Green New Deal policies to address the climate crisis and create 15 million good jobs with racial and economic justice at its core. The THRIVE Act builds upon President Biden’s American Jobs Plan — with additional funding for key climate priorities.

But the THRIVE Act also has a tough path through Congress. It’s why we’re mobilizing towards an all-out push on members of Congress… starting right now and going through this summer. Email your members of Congress:

JUGGERNAUT PROJECT

The tragic weather events and horrific scenes of truck and car crashes in Texas and around the country this winter ensure that the dual issues of climate change and safe roads will be front and center as Congress debates infrastructure over the coming weeks.

That’s why big corporations and their lobbyists are working overtime to pressure Congress to allow heavier, longer, bigger and more polluting trucks on our highways.

Can you sign the petition from the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks to join the campaign to protect our motorists, infrastructure, climate and air quality?

Sign the petition: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/tell-congress-keep-bigger-heavier-more-polluting-trucks-off-our-highways?clear_id=true&source=email-sign-the-petition-say-no-to-bigger-heavier-more-polluting-trucks-3

UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS

When it comes to fossil fuel accountability, these next few weeks are the most exciting and nail-biting of the year here at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

This is the month when shareholders, investors, directors, and leaders of fossil fuel companies come together and vote on the future of their businesses. As two of the world’s largest asset managers, BlackRock’s and Vanguard’s sizable investments in fossil fuels—exceeding more than $100 billion—make them critical players in these votes.

Three years ago, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink wrote that companies should focus on serving a social purpose. Last year, in response to growing pressure from activists like you, Fink signaled that BlackRock was ready and willing to “vote against management and board members when companies are not making sufficient progress” on climate action.

Yet despite small steps, neither company’s track record holds up. For the past few years, BlackRock and Vanguard have repeatedly failed to support a number of critical climate shareholder proposals. These investment giants have continued to support corporate board members who delay climate action in favor of raking in more profit.
