Proposed Sustainability Policy

We encourage the trustees to develop and adopt a written comprehensive Sustainability Policy for the greater good of the community:

      • Renewable Energy — The policy could address the expense on energy to heat, cool and light the township buildings and illuminate outside grounds with a future look toward implementation of renewable energy options.
      • East Branch of the Rocky River — This upstream watershed follows a circuitous path through Hinckley with many smaller tributaries.  The Sustainability Policy should also allow a long-range plan to protect, restore and perpetuate a healthy watershed within the borders of our township.
      • Partnership with the Cleveland Metroparks — The Hinckley Reservation has a very large footprint within Hinckley Township, yet the land is owned and governed by the Cleveland Metroparks in Cuyahoga County.  Coordination between the Metropark planning officers and Hinckley Township’s Trustees could have a positive effect on our community. The Metroparks adopted their Sustainability Policy in 2017.

Police Station Addition
  • August 3, 2021: The Hinckley Trustees approved a contract submission by LaBella Associates for an addition to the south elevation of the current police station.
  • October 19, 2021: The Trustees hired GPD Group to perform a site survey and provide geotechnical services for the area around the station.
  • November 16, 2021: LaBella’s estimate of the construction budget was $1,740,000 plus 7.5% of the construction costs for architectural/engineering services.
  • 350 Hinckley has been reviewing the plans with the trustees and working towards encouraging the architects to build sustainably; primarily, designing a maximized south-facing roof that could one day accommodate solar panels. The optimum slope of that roof surface would be at or near 40 degrees.
  • December 7, 2021: The trustees put the project on hold because of escalating costs for materials and labor mainly due to the pandemic.
  • 350 Hinckley will pursue this work when the project resumes.

Comprehensive Plan Update
  • At the urging of residents and Keep Hinckley Rural, Hinckley Township will be conducting an audit of the township’s existing Comprehensive Plan. The trustees agree the township has endured significant changes over the last few years and would like to identify areas in the plan that may need updating.
  • August 3, 2021: OHM Advisors has been hired to conduct the audit that may result in an updating of the 2015 Comprehensive Plan.
  • This audit will be spearheaded by a Steering Committee of ten to twelve residents and/or Hinckley landowners and three alternates that will work in conjunction with a Zoning Commission member, a trustee, a former trustee and member of the Medina Planning Commission, and the planning group OHM Advisors.
  • December 21, 2021: 98 Applications for the Steering Committee were received and the trustees selected eleven members (?) and three alternates to form the citizen portion of the committee representing our diverse community. The Steering Committee will meet in early 2022 before any recommendations are made public.
  • The trustees may decide to move ahead with a township-wide public survey followed by public meetings to gather more input from residents and landowners.
