OTHER LETTERS/PETITIONS/CALLS

350 Humboldt

Katy Gurin writes: I was just phonebanking to folks in Sinemas district (she’s a swing vote in the senate), and it was great. You’re calling Sierra Club members and supporters of the Act, so they’re very friendly and informed. I got two people to call in under 30 minutes– they just needed a little bit of a nudge.  Once you’re trained you can call whenever the dialer is open.

HUMBOLDT TRAILS COUNCIL

Please join us in demanding our local, state, and national representatives use every possible means to stop the coal train. We need your support on an action to tell the Humboldt Bay Harbor District to protect Humboldt Bay by passing an ordinance to prohibit coal export facilities within their jurisdiction.

For the trails,

Karen Underwood

Sample Letter:

Dear Humboldt Bay Harbor Commissioners,

Coal interests are moving to seize the North Coast Railroad Authority’s rail line in a scheme to ship coal out of Humboldt Bay to Asia.

This is a threat to our community and our planet. Please act immediately to help prevent this nightmare from becoming a reality.

Jurisdictions across the West Coast have adopted ordinances that build upon local government authority to prohibit or impede similar projects. Please use your authority to bar the storage and handling of coal in Humboldt Bay.

Please also continue to support railbanking the NCRA’s rail line from Willits to Humboldt Bay for the Great Redwood Trail.

Sincerely,

[Name]

EVCHARGING ACCESS FOR ALL

Did you know that California ensures that every new single-family home built in our state is set up for EV charging? But less than 40% of parking spaces in new multi-family homes will be EV ready, if the new proposed CALGreen building code for 2023-2025 is adopted as is. If the draft code isn’t strengthened, apartment and condo residents will continue to lack access to the financial, health and climate benefits of driving electric vehicles.

If you agree that this is wrong, please take two minutes now to speak up for EV equity!

Send this sample email— which you’re welcome to personalize. Comments must be submitted by Sept. 27, 2021–the sooner the better. Remember to cc us at [email protected] so we can see how many emails we’re generating

UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS

This opportunity comes as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) works to undo the Trump administration’s disastrous rollback—the rollback that the auto industry asked for in the first place, despite the fact that they initially supported the strong clean car standards that were put in place in 2012.

Unfortunately, this new proposal doesn’t go nearly far enough to put us back on the road to progress. Write a comment today urging the EPA to adopt stronger clean car standards.

SHIP IT ZERO

Your emails to Amazon executives were a game changer for our campaign. Thanks to your pressure, we are now in direct negotiation with Amazon Leadership. Now, help us bring the heat to IKEA!

While IKEA’s new advertising puts the burden of climate action on customers and families, IKEA continues to keep the oil industry afloat by shipping its products on dirty, fossil-fueled ships.

In 2019, IKEA’s U.S. maritime imports alone emitted over 410,000 metric tons of CO2, helping the company earn the seventh-most polluting spot in our landmark Shady Ships report.

AMAZON WATCH

It’s Climate Week 2021, a week dedicated to showcase global actions taking place to address the current climate emergency. On Tuesday, Indigenous leaders, in partnership with Amazon Watch and Stand.earth, launched a new campaign to make ending Amazon crude a prominent climate solution.

This year, our demand that financial institutions exit Amazon oil and gaswas among the important new climate actions. Beyond Climate Week, we must continue to hold the CEO’s of these financial institutions accountable for their role in the destruction of the Amazon!

SIERRA CLUB

The Dept of Interior is currently reviewing the Trump administration’s plans for oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge. And we have just about one week left to comment!

Tell them to cancel the leases for Arctic drilling — for Indigenous sovereignty, wildlife protections, and the devastating impacts on the climate crisis.

350 SV

350 Silicon Valley and our partners at 350 Seattle and 350 Bay Area Action have put together a simple letter tool you can use to send notes to Speaker Pelosi, the House Rules Committee, and Majority Leader Schumer, urging them to do the right thing by the climate and letting them know they have our support in cutting the subsidies and tax breaks from the bill.

What else can we do?

We can join phone banks to constituents of Senators Manchin (W. Virginia) and Sinema (Arizona), reminding them to call and urge the holdouts to get with the program when the reconciliation bill comes up for a vote in the Senate.

  • The Sierra Club (national) has two phone banks to swing states and waverers coming up next week on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5 pm Pacific. Sign up here.
  • Also on Tuesday, the  350 Bay Area Mobilizing Team is hosting a half-hour online Power Zap, making fast, fun, federal action calls from 5:30-6pm Pacific. Sign up here.

We can phone Congressional offices over the weekend, and leave messages.

  • Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern: 202-225-6101. Leave your own message or use this script: “Thank you for your support of the End Polluter Welfare Act. As chair of the House Rules Committee, I’m counting on you to work to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies in the budget reconciliation plan. The nation needs you to lead on bold climate action!”
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer: 202-224-6542. Let him know we’ve got his back eliminating fossil fuel subsidies.
  • House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: 202-225-4965. Tell her we’re all behind the biggest, boldest Build Back Better bill.

VOTING – VOTE FORWARD https://votefwd.org/campaigns  The founder of World Letter Writing Day says: Never underestimate the power of writing a letter to someone. We agree. Writing Vote Forward letters on September 1 is a great way to make a powerful connection with a fellow voter and one of the most effective ways to encourage that voter to turn out to vote in November. Virginia is winnable for Democrats this year, but recent polling shows the races are close. If Republicans win this fall, they will no doubt use a Virginia victory to propel them into the 2022 midterm elections.

please visit your dashboard to “adopt” Democratic-leaning Virginia voters.
