The California Air Resources Board has recently complete a draft “Scoping Plan” which outlines the direction California will take on climate over the next 23 years. It is not at all up to the requirements that the IPCC has told us are necessary not to exceed a 1.5 degrees C. rise in temperatures, which would be disastrous. We are at 1.1 degrees now. Imagine the 2 or 3 degrees that the Scoping Plan would lead to. Three organizations are asking us to petition the Board for a stronger plan. 350 Humboldt will be asking you to support our proposed revisions soon. In the mean time please sign these three petitions.

This year, California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) is developing its 2022 Scoping Plan, a blueprint for California’s climate policy for the next 20 years. The stakes are huge. The Scoping Plan could commit California to bold action and a full, coordinated phase-out of oil and gas — or it could replicate many of the loopholes that have allowed Big Oil to continue to pollute our neighborhoods.

Take action by sending a letter to California decision-makers today.

Climate Center

Fossil fuel lobbyists have spent millions of dollars to influence this plan and they have CARB’s attention. We have a narrow window of opportunity between now and June to push back and we need your voice. Tell the California Air Resources Board that climate action by 2045 is too late!

Sierra Club

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) released a draft of the state’s 2022 Climate Change Scoping Plan Update, which lays out a roadmap for how the state can achieve its carbon emissions goals. Unfortunately, the draft plan doesn’t go far enough in meeting several of those climate goals, including reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, and protecting California communities from pollution. Even worse, it won’t allow the state to reach carbon neutrality until 2045.

Tell CARB 2045 is too late to reach our climate goals! Email the agency TODAY and demand a better for the future of California!

The Green New Deal for Public Schools (H.R. 4442), just like a broader Green New Deal for everywhere, would not only slow the destruction of the Earth’s climate and create a large number of jobs, but actually save money in medical bills and in emergency responses to environmental disasters. But even the initial cost of the Green New Deal for Schools would be less than the U.S. government gives each year to just five weapons companies.
The bill has 68 cosponsors and no Senate version.

You may have already signed this petition. If not, please do so.

CARB’s draft clean cars rule falls short of the actions we need. Because cars generally stay on the road for 20 years, the 2035 target date CARB proposes for all-ZEV passenger vehicle sales will be much too late to avoid the worst of the fires, droughts, disease, and other dangers brought by a warming planet, as it perpetuates our need for oil. California must lead the nation in the transition to 100 percent no later than 2030. If we do, other states will follow, the auto industry will accelerate production of clean cars—and prices will fall for everyone.

Click here to sign our petition and leave an additional comment for CARB,telling them why the transition away from gasoline-powered vehicles is both important—and urgent.

Sierra Club asks for an action on the same issue

Setting strong zero-emissions vehicle sales requirements will help lower air pollution and protect public health, especially for the majority of Californians who are living in places with unhealthy levels of ozone or particle pollution. And, as transportation is our largest source of carbon pollution, transitioning to electric vehicles will reduce the risk of climate disasters.

We need your help strengthening the ACC II rule today. Join us and tell California that we cannot allow cars and trucks to continue polluting our communities.

Climate Reality Project

The US Army Corps of Engineers is formally reviewing the Nationwide Permit (NWP) 12, which authorizes oil and natural gas pipeline activities. The NWP 12 has been key in allowing companies to bypass environmental reviews and public input to construct pipelines in certain circumstances. This is a critical moment to stop Big Oil from using these loopholes and harming our communities. The comment period closes in just a few days and we need your support now to make a difference.

Join us: Tell the US Army Corps of Engineers to only issue permits based on sound science, considerations and ramifications of the climate and environmental justice impacts, and extensive input from all impacted communities.

Climate Hawks Vote

There’s a very serious problem brewing at the Commerce Department that could destroy the entire United States solar industry. Solar panel supply problems are already causing utilities to keep coal plants open instead of moving to clean renewable solar power. Joe Biden needs to fix it.

Take action now: Tell the Commerce Department to stop stifling solar power.

Third Act – Bill McKibben’s new group is postcarding

Let’s join together as Third Act’s Democracy Force to write postcards and mobilize voters in Arizona and Pennsylvania to request their vote-by-mail ballot in time for Midterm Primary Elections. Learn more below about why postcards and mail voting are vital and effective at increasing turnout.

Vote Forward: Here is a new advance in targeting letters to where they make most difference. If you write to voters, please take a look.

This year, we’re bringing back The Big Send—our biggest letter writing program of the year—with a goal of sending 10 million letters to voters ahead of the midterm elections this fall. And with you on our team, we’re confident we can make this happen. Because you’ve volunteered with us before, all you need to do to participate is keep writing! Just head over to your Vote Forward dashboard to download a batch of letters.

To kick off the return of The Big Send, we’re hosting a virtual letter writing event on May 12 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.

Postcards for swing states

We need your help to write 550,000 postcards to rally Democrats to vote in the Pennsylvania primary on May 17. Encouraging Democrats to make voting a habit now will ensure more of them will also vote in November.

Sign up now and we’ll mail you free postcards with the design below, along with instructions and voter lists. Volunteers need to provide the postcard stamps. You’ll pick from three messages that we’re testing as the first step of signing up. You’ll have until May 6 to finish writing the postcards.

Environmental Voter Project

Our next postcarding campaign will be to Colorado voters ahead of their June 28th state primary!

We’ll be sending postcards to environmental voters who voted in the 2020 General Election, but are unlikely to vote in midterm elections based on their previous voting history. We expect to begin mailing out packages of postcards to signed-up volunteers beginning in late March, and the required “mail-to-voters” date for this round of postcards is on Monday, June 6th.

This sign up form is only for trained EVP postcarding volunteers. New postcarding volunteers should sign up for an orientation below.

If you have not already attended an EVP postcard training, please sign up for one of the 45 minute trainings below. We use very specific designs and messaging that are optimized to increase turnout, so we require all our postcarding volunteers to receive an EVP training before sending postcards.

POSTCARD WRITING TO VOTERS ORGANIZED BY HUMBOLDT ACTIVIST FREDERICA AALTO

Here is Frederica describes what they are doing:

I am administering a postcarding network in Humboldt County (presently over 300 writers) and we supply postcards and stamps to writers, which are available for cost at several convenient pickup locations. Have anyone interested in joining us contact me. We mostly postcard for ROV (Reclaim Our Vote), which is non-partisan, but have also postcarded for Activate America (which used to be called Flip the West), which is partisan.
