Last week Cal Poly professor Jen Marlow presented an extremely interesting talk on the ways in which climate change induced sea  level rise is pushing people to relocate. She shared examples from the Alaskan village of Kivalina, where she lived for several years, and from Humbold County where spent nuclear fuel and other nuclear waste is store only 44 feet above sea level and plans for relocating it are stalled. (Hence the name of her project: 44 Feet.)

Below is further information about the Humboldt issue that Jen Marlow has asked us to consider.

Please help out and also continue to learn about these issues of adaptation. You don’t need to have attended the talk in order to participate in the survey(s).

2) To read a Policy Brief co-authored by my grad students Alec Brown, Julie Sorfleet, and I on the long-term management of spent nuclear fuel in a climate-changed world, please view the brief titled “Crafting Effective Oversight for the Long-Term Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel on Sites at Risk of Climate and Coastal Hazards.” The peer-reviewed article, published by Frontiers in Climate, is available here.
3) Link to a recent article in ICT News noting that the federal government is dedicating more funds into Native American and Alaska Native Village relocation.
4) And finally, although I didn’t mention this during my talk, I am part of a lead author group that will publish the North Coast Regional Report for California’s Fifth Climate Assessment. We put together a short survey to gather input from communities and Tribes in the region about the impacts and issues they think the report should prioritize. The survey takes about 5 minutes. To take the survey, or to share your contact information and interest in being involved with the report, please click this link:  https://forms.gle/gBG3PKsU9cZeKLhu9
