Please attend the
public workshop for the Transit Development Plan for Humboldt
on Tuesday, May 23 at 5 PM. That’s tomorrow. This is a prime
opportunity to give Humboldt County Association of Governments
[HCAOG] the kind of public input it needs.
Register here ASAP to Zoom the meeting, or you can show up at the HCAOG office at
611 I Street, suite B. Can’t make it? Email a comment by May 31 to
Claire Hutchison at [email protected]
Here are some
helpful talking points from Wendy Ring.
HCAOG needs a
transit plan which meets its own goals. The target of HCAOG’s
Regional Transportation Plan is to double transit trips by 2025 and
double them again by 2030. The Transit Development Plan should
put us on track to meet these targets.
Don’t base
future ridership on current ridership. Ridership projections
should take into account our expanding population, increased high
density housing along transit corridors, an escalating climate
crisis, and the impact of CAP measures such as parking fees and large
employers providing alternatives like transit passes to reduce
vehicle miles traveled [VMT].
Express all the
way from McKinleyville to College of the Redwoods. A significant
amount of the county’s VMT comes from car trips originating in McK,
so express service should extend that far north with an intercity bus
every 15 minutes.
Bus stops need
bike shares. Bikes are an important part of multi-modal
transportation because they can be used for first and last mile
transportation to/from transit. Bike share stations at heavily used
bus stops (preferably with ebikes included) are as important as bike
lockers, especially on city buses that can’t transport bikes.
Vehicle
registration fee can provide funding. Include in potential
funding sources a congestion fee added to vehicle registrations.
Hope you can make it, nimble activists! Sorry for the last-minute notice.
