Here are a number of possibilities for taking action this week to help move us away from burning fossil fuels. A short description of each comes first, then a longer explanation which tells you how you can get involved. (Sorry, the list below could not be hyperlinked to the detail; you have to scroll down.)
2. SB 260. The Climate Corporate Accountability Act
4. Continued support for building electrification
5. ASK THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO SUPPORT OREGON’S REJECTION OF THE JORDAN COVE PIPELINE
7. Stop building code subversion
8. Write to keep the pressure on big financial institutions to defund fossil fuel companies
If you want to write in the company of others, or if you have questions, join other 350 Humboldt members tonight, Sunday the 31st of January, at 7pm. Zoom link:

*************************DETAIL FOR ACTIONS*********************************
1. Line 3
There is more Line 3 action with many well known people and “stars” signing a letter to Minnesota officials asking that Line 3 be stopped. See the letter here.
Here is a toolkit for sending letters, signing a petition, tweeting, etc: https://www.stopline3.org/walz-toolkit
2. SB 260. The Climate Corporate Accountability Act
SB 260 — the first bill of its kind in the nation — mandates all companies with over $1 billion in gross annual revenue disclose and set up targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Listen to this press conference from Friday announcing the introduction of SB 260 The Corporate Climate Accountability Act w/ sponsors, CLCV, CO2A (Carbon Accountable) and Sunrise Movement Bay Area. They give a good overview & describe what the bill will do and why it is needed. (Sen Scott Wiener. Asm Ash Kalra, Asm Robert Rivas). Listen to the Sunrise Movement BA SF 9th grader. Kalpana Narlikar who goes last! Take a listen!

Sacramento — Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) introduced Senate Bill 260, the Climate Corporate Accountability Act (CCAA). SB 260 would be the first law in the country to require U.S.-based companies — those doing business in California and generating over $1 billion in gross annual revenue — to disclose all of their greenhouse gas emissions and set science-based targets to reduce those emissions. SB 260 is co-sponsored by Carbon Accountable, Sunrise Bay Area, and the California League of Conservation Voters. This legislation will hold corporations accountable for their emissions, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the near- and long-term, and help California stay a national leader in the fight against climate change.
Send emails to the sponsors thanking them.
3. REQUEST FROM NRDC
If the past year has taught Californians one thing, it’s that our health, our climate, and our environment cannot wait.
Our California state legislators are now back in session in Sacramento — will you send them a note urging them to fight for a healthy, sustainable, and equitable California in 2021?
4. Continued support for building electrification
From Pat Carr, 350 Humboldt steering committee member: I virtually attended a CEC meeting today on building electrification. At issue was a CEC plan to develop an all-electric building code by 2025. Rocky Mountain Institute pulled together a group of people, of which I was one of 20, asking that that code be moved up to 2022.
They’re still taking comments, and they can be sent to:

If you’re interested here’s what I said.
Thanks for the opportunity to speak today. I’m a resident of Arcata CA in the far north of the state and representing 350 Humboldt.
I believe that the CEC should adopt a single, all-electric baseline for all building types as soon as possible. All-electric buildings are cheaper to build and operate, better for public health, and critical to protect us from the climate crisis.
We all know that we need to move swiftly to reduce carbon emissions. We simply dig ourselves a deeper hole if we continue developing new buildings that use natural gas. Those buildings will eventually require expensive retrofits to become carbon neutral. Economically it makes much more sense to get it done right the first time by electrifying new buildings’ cooking, space, and water heating systems.
We believe the greatest savings come from setting the standard for all-electric NOW, rather than make buildings electric-ready but with gas as an option for now. Placing the gas infrastructure alone adds a lot of money to construction costs. I don’t think it’s wise for the CEC to set a standard that has the potential to raise building costs any more than absolutely necessary.
5. ASK THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO SUPPORT OREGON’S REJECTION OF THE JORDAN COVE PIPELINE
We all need to raise our voices to make sure that the Biden administration respects Oregon’s authority to stop Jordan Cove LNG for good. Can you send an email today to tell the Federal government to uphold Oregon’s denial of Jordan Cove LNG?
In February 2020, the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development denied the proposed pipeline and export terminal because it would have significant harm on Oregon’s coastal resources and communities. Pembina, the Canadian fossil fuel corporation behind Jordan Cove LNG, has asked the US Secretary of Commerce to overturn Oregon’s permit denial. The deadline for this decision is Tuesday, February 9th.
6. Write to sponsors of Fox news and get them to stop sponsoring Fox disinformation. Here is a list: You can use Facebook and Twitter to send your message.

8. Write to keep the pressure on big financial institutions to defund fossil fuel companies
We are only a few weeks into 2021 and today we’ve announced the inspiring news that European banks BNP Paribas Group, Credit Suisse, Rabobank, and ING – collectively responsible for financing the trade of over $5.5 billion in Amazon oil to the U.S. from 2009 to 2020 – have committed to immediate exclusion measures on the trading of oil from the Amazon Sacred Headwaters of Ecuador!
Our first targets in this work to pressure important decision-makers are the financial regulatory agency nominees of the new Biden administration. Wall Street firms like JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock, and Citigroup. Amazon Watch and other ally organizations are calling on President Biden to use existing regulatory powers to ensure that these firms are on a clear path to limit their financing of fossil fuel and deforestation commodities in time for the crucial U.N. climate conference in Glasgow in November 2021.
Supporters of Amazon Watch – especially those who are also clients of one of these six firms – can play an important role in our campaign to hold them accountable for keeping the Amazon safe.
