TIMBER WARS ARE NOT OVER

At this moment the last 2% of old-growth forests on Vancouver Island are being cut down. With over 1,000 arrests, the Fairy Creek blockade is now the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history. Fairy Creek watershed is on the traditional territory of the Pacheedaht First Nations. For over a year now there have been protesters setting up blockades to save the island’s last remaining old-growth temperate rainforests at Fairy Creek watershed. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have violently abused and harassed protesters, bulldozed their camps as well as destroyed cars and personal belongings.

We are facing an urgent biodiversity and climate crisis. Climate change causes more fires, floods, and landslides and old-growth forests help keep our communities more safe. Clear cutting only makes matters worse. These trees that are being logged are over a thousand years old and support so much ecological diversity as well as store a lot of carbon.

NEW POSTCARD WRITING GROUP FOCUSES ON CITIES

We wanted to let you know that we just helped start a new postcard program focused on making sure progressive voters who care about climate change turnout in local elections this November in some key cities with relevant climate policy at stake. It’s www.PostcardsforClimate.com.

It’s unrelated to Postcards to Swing States but has a similar setup.

Would you be willing to write some of these postcards? The sign-up form is accessible from the website.

Our goal is to write 400,000 postcards, and we will start shipping cards next week. The first mailing deadlines are in mid-October. We have an FAQ with more details: www.PostcardsforClimate.com/faq.

POSTCARD WRITING TO VOTERS ORGANIZED BY HUMBOLDT ACTIVIST FREDERICA AALTO

Here is Frederica describes what they are doing:

I am administering a postcarding network in Humboldt County (presently over 300 writers) and we supply postcards and stamps to writers, which are available for cost at several convenient pickup locations. Have anyone interested in joining us contact me. We mostly postcard for ROV (Reclaim Our Vote), which is non-partisan, but have also postcarded for Activate America (which used to be called Flip the West), which is partisan.

VOTING – VOTE FORWARD

https://votefwd.org/campaigns

The founder of World Letter Writing Day says: Never underestimate the power of writing a letter to someone. We agree. Writing Vote Forward letters on September 1 is a great way to make a powerful connection with a fellow voter and one of the most effective ways to encourage that voter to turn out to vote in November.

Virginia is winnable for Democrats this year, but recent polling shows the races are close. If Republicans win this fall, they will no doubt use a Virginia victory to propel them into the 2022 midterm elections.

Let’s work together to make September 1 a record-setting day of letter writing to boost voter turnout in Virginia!

To prepare for World Letter Writing Day, please visit your dashboard to “adopt” Democratic-leaning Virginia voters.

VOTING – POSTCARDS TO SWING STATES

IMPORTANT: The Postal Service is increasing postcard stamp prices on August 29th. The price will go up to $0.40 from the current $0.36. Here are a couple important things to know:

You can use postcard stamps forever regardless of their current price, just like Forever Stamps.

The easiest way to stock up on postcard stamps before the price increase is to buy them online from USPS here. You can also buy them from your local post office.

Prices for Forever Stamps also go up on the 29th, from $0.55 to $0.58.

Please SIGN UP to write postcards to make sure Democrats come out and vote. We’ll send you the postcards, addresses and instructions for free. You provide $0.36 stamps and mail the cards.  A number of campaigns are available on the website.

With the help of volunteers like you, we wrote 21 million postcards in 2020, and we saw incredible results! Voters who receive handwritten postcards are significantly more likely to vote. You can help us keep New Jersey and Virginia blue!

The recall is done, and Governor Newsom can get back to his day job…which better include signing a raft of climate bills now piled up on his desk (with hundreds of others).

We’ve created a letter tool you can use to tell the Governor we want him to sign the climate legislation that has made it through this most challenging year for our legislative priorities.

Click here to see the bills we support, and send your message to the Governor,
urging him to sign them!

So we’re doubling down on our call for Congress to include strong, unprecedented climate action in the budget reconciliation bill. This bill must include provisions to shift the nation to a clean energy economy … expand electric vehicles and invest in clean and affordable low-carbon transit for all … ensure every community has access to safe, lead-free drinking water … and reduce toxic pollution in communities being left behind by the oil and gas industry.

Please, tell Representative Jared Huffman and Senators Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla that you’re counting on them to pass the strong climate measures needed to combat the climate crisis and move toward a clean energy future.
