If you are a consumer considering electrifying your home, or a local official, or a climate activist there is a great podcast you can listen to. David Roberts (a favorite climate journalist) asks all the right questions of Panama Bartholomy, a long-time climate activist and California policy-maker who is now head of the Building Decarbonization Coalition. Find out about heat pumps, induction stoves, local actions to take, investor owned utility opposition and much more.

A.    Here are some petitions to sign and letters to write. It won’t take more than a few minutes and every action we take counts in the climate crisis. Below the petitions are opportunities to write postcards to voters in important elections.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation of methane (natural gas) from oil and gas operations is closing public comment THIS Monday, January 31. If we want to be heard in their rulemaking process, now is the time to act.

We believe that regulation of methane must be even more stringent than the current proposal. That is because methane over its 12-year lifespan is a greenhouse gas around 104 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Reducing methane releases NOW will make a significant contribution toward reducing global heating in the short term.

To learn more and sign the petition we’ll submit to the EPA before the deadline, click below.

Tell the EPA to restore strict regulations for methane

The Supreme Court is increasingly taking on cases with climate implications: from reviewing Republican challenges to the Clean Air Act, the status of oil and gas leasing, the EPA’s ability to curb carbon pollution, and more. It’s crucial that President Biden put forward a Black woman nominee who will prioritize climate justice and not give in to corporations and Big Oil.

This is a huge opportunity we don’t get often, and we need to seize the moment. Will you add your name to our urgent petition demanding President Biden nominate a climate champion to the Supreme Court?

SIERRA CLUB

We have only a few more days to tell the EPA that the oil and gas industry must be held accountable for fueling the climate crisis. As people across the country are impacted by climate disruption, now is the time to slash methane pollution from oil and gas drilling. The comment period ends January 31. Will you take action?

For far too long, the Jim Bridger coal plant in Wyoming has polluted the skies of some of our most famous national parks, including Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Now, this pollution is illegal. The coal plant’s owner, PacifiCorp, one of the largest for-profit monopoly energy providers in the country, has knowingly violated the Clean Air Act and avoided responsibility for this pollution.

Take Action: Right now, you can write and send a public comment to the EPA asking them to hold PacifiCorp accountable and to enforce the law.

CENTER FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

Electric and gas utility companies — many of which cling to dirty fossil fuels instead of embracing the transition to renewable energy — are forcing their customers to finance anti-environment trade groups. Not only is this practice a disaster for the climate, but it also violates our First Amendment rights.

The Center for Biological Diversity is taking legal action. Will you help by sending a comment to federal regulators?

Urge Secretary Haaland not to appeal a recent court decision regarding oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico. You may remember that in spite of opposition from climate groups around the country, President Biden moved forward with oil and gas leases of more than 80 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico late last year. Happily for the world, on Thursday, a federal judge canceled these leases ruling that the administration did not sufficiently take climate change into account when auctioning the leases. Please urge Secretary Haaland not to appeal the recent court decision, using this easy form.

B.    WRITE LETTERS TO VOTERS

ENVIRONMENTAL VOTER PROJECT HAS A NEW POSTCARD CAMPAIGN

We’re thrilled to announce that the Environmental Voter Project has officially launched a new volunteer postcarding program!

We’ll be sending postcards to environmentalists in Tempe, AZ who voted in 2020 but are unlikely to vote in their March 8th city primary election.

POSTCARD CAMPAIGN TARGETS FLORIDA VOTERS

Florida: Postcards and Letter Writing to Voters

Virtual Postcard Writing · Hosted by Broward for Progress (browardforprogress.org)

https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/417759/

Join us for Postcards to Voters. We’re writing to Florida voters and need your help! Last cycle we sent almost 100,000 postcards out. Will you join us? 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference!

NEW POSTCARD CAMPAIGN FOR WISCONSIN VOTERS: Starts January 10

From Activate America (Formerly Flip the West)

We are writing to likely Democrats in Wisconsin to let them know Democrats delivered on their promises with the new Infrastructure and Jobs Act. Wisconsin is widely considered to be the most vulnerable state in the Democrats’ “blue wall” for presidential elections. Then-candidate Joe Biden narrowly won the state in 2020 after Donald Trump won in 2016. But Republican Senator Ron Johnson is increasingly out of touch with reality.

Many voters do not pay attention to their elected officials’ voting records. Join Activate America (formerly Flip the West) as we write to Wisconsin voters and let them know how Johnson is voting against their interests.

You may also chose to write a similar message to voters in key CA congressional districts in Spanish or in English.

PROGRESSIVE TURNOUT PROJECT CAMPAIGN

Write postcards to first-time voters in ten states with key Senate races in 2022. Help us make sure Democrats stay engaged and make voting a habit in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

We’ll send you postcards, addresses and instructions. You provide stamps and mail the cards to voters before the Jan. 7, 2022 deadline.

Voters who receive handwritten postcards are significantly more likely to vote. In 2020, our volunteers sent 21 million postcards to voters in 14 swing states, and we saw incredible results!

Postcards to Swing States is a project of Progressive Turnout Project. For more information, visit us at turnoutpac.org/postcards or send us an email.

POSTCARD WRITING TO VOTERS ORGANIZED BY HUMBOLDT ACTIVIST FREDERICA AALTO

Here is Frederica describes what they are doing:

I am administering a postcarding network in Humboldt County (presently over 300 writers) and we supply postcards and stamps to writers, which are available for cost at several convenient pickup locations. Have anyone interested in joining us contact me. We mostly postcard for ROV (Reclaim Our Vote), which is non-partisan, but have also postcarded for Activate America (which used to be called Flip the West), which is partisan.
