A.    Here are some petitions to sign and letters to write. It won’t take more than a few minutes and every action we take counts in the climate crisis. Below the petitions are opportunities to write postcards to voters in important elections.

STAND

The fracked gas pipeline crosses unceded Wet’suwet’en territory in northern British Columbia, Canada and risks making the sacred headwaters of the Wedzin Kwa, a pristine ecosystem, undrinkable. The hereditary chiefs of all 5 Wet’suwet’en clans have refused to give consent to the project. In response, Wet’suwet’en land and water defenders have been attacked on their territories, and violently brutalized by the Canadian federal police. The financiers of this project could stop this atrocity tomorrow; all they need to do is cancel the loans and sell their investment in Coastal GasLink.

Daniel, will you sign this petition and stand in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en?

FOSSIL FREE CA

Last week, Senator Lena Gonzalez introduced SB 1173—or, the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act—to the California legislature. The bill would require California’s two powerful public employee pension funds, CalPERS and CalSTRS, to divest nearly $9 billion from fossil fuel companies.

This bill is preceded by eight years of teachers, students, and climate advocacy groups pressing the pensions’ boards of directors to divest from fossil fuels. Additionally, state legislation was passed in 2015 that required the financial giants to divest from thermal coal.

CENTER FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

Alaska is home to 23 million acres of pristine habitat for iconic species like polar bears, caribou, and birds that migrate to six continents — even, maybe, to your own backyard. But if ConocoPhillips gets its way, this single-largest piece of undeveloped public land in the United States will be breached by a gigantic oil development. The project would include up to 250 wells, hundreds of miles of ice roads, more than 380 miles of pipelines, an airstrip, a gravel mine, a processing plant, and this project would emit more than 280 million tons of greenhouse gases over 30 years. Meanwhile it would cause oil spills and toxic air pollution harming Indigenous communities on Alaska’s North Slope.

Tell the Interior Department to reject this project and keep Arctic oil in the ground — for the sake of wildlife, people and the climate.

B.    WRITE LETTERS TO VOTERS

There are some new postcard writing and letter writing opportunities. Check them out.

VOTE FORWARD – NEW CAMPAIGN

Vote Forward’s first 2022 letter writing campaigns are here.

Why now? Starting early gives us time to write more letters and reach more voters. And with so much at stake, there’s no time to spare.

Start writing letters today by visiting your Vote Forward dashboard. Remember: Hold your letters until our mail date in late October. Letters mailed now will not work to boost voter turnout this fall.

NEW POSTCARD CAMPAIGN FOR WISCONSIN VOTERS:

From Activate America (Formerly Flip the West)

We are writing to likely Democrats in Wisconsin to let them know Democrats delivered on their promises with the new Infrastructure and Jobs Act. Wisconsin is widely considered to be the most vulnerable state in the Democrats’ “blue wall” for presidential elections. Then-candidate Joe Biden narrowly won the state in 2020 after Donald Trump won in 2016. But Republican Senator Ron Johnson is increasingly out of touch with reality.

Many voters do not pay attention to their elected officials’ voting records. Join Activate America (formerly Flip the West) as we write to Wisconsin voters and let them know how Johnson is voting against their interests.

You may also chose to write a similar message to voters in key CA congressional districts in Spanish or in English.

POSTCARD WRITING TO VOTERS ORGANIZED BY HUMBOLDT ACTIVIST FREDERICA AALTO

Here is Frederica describes what they are doing:

I am administering a postcarding network in Humboldt County (presently over 300 writers) and we supply postcards and stamps to writers, which are available for cost at several convenient pickup locations. Have anyone interested in joining us contact me. We mostly postcard for ROV (Reclaim Our Vote), which is non-partisan, but have also postcarded for Activate America (which used to be called Flip the West), which is partisan.
