In the 17 months that 350 Humboldt has had a letter writing group we have sent over 8,480* physical letters, mostly to rouse voters to register or vote. We have also signed innumerable on-line petitions and letters. But beyond that we have fun! Please join us for an hour of letter-writing, exchange of information, and a bit of chit chat.
*Not all of these were written during letter writing hour: During the 2020 election some members of the group spent many hours a week writing.
Write letters and sign petitions on your own or join the 350 Humboldt “chat and write” letter-writing group Sunday evenings at 7pm. Here is the zoom link:

WRITE LETTERS TO VOTERS
NEW POSTCARD WRITING GROUP FOCUSES ON CITIES
We wanted to let you know that we just helped start a new postcard program focused on making sure progressive voters who care about climate change turnout in local elections this November in some key cities with relevant climate policy at stake. It’s www.PostcardsforClimate.com.
It’s unrelated to Postcards to Swing States but has a similar setup.
Would you be willing to write some of these postcards? The sign-up form is accessible from the website.
Our goal is to write 400,000 postcards, and we will start shipping cards next week. The first mailing deadlines are in mid-October. We have an FAQ with more details: www.PostcardsforClimate.com/faq.
POSTCARD WRITING TO VOTERS ORGANIZED BY HUMBOLDT ACTIVIST FREDERICA AALTO
Here is Frederica describes what they are doing:
I am administering a postcarding network in Humboldt County (presently over 300 writers) and we supply postcards and stamps to writers, which are available for cost at several convenient pickup locations. Have anyone interested in joining us contact me. We mostly postcard for ROV (Reclaim Our Vote), which is non-partisan, but have also postcarded for Activate America (which used to be called Flip the West), which is partisan.

VOTING – VOTE FORWARD
The founder of World Letter Writing Day says: Never underestimate the power of writing a letter to someone. We agree. Writing Vote Forward letters on September 1 is a great way to make a powerful connection with a fellow voter and one of the most effective ways to encourage that voter to turn out to vote in November.
Virginia is winnable for Democrats this year, but recent polling shows the races are close. If Republicans win this fall, they will no doubt use a Virginia victory to propel them into the 2022 midterm elections.
Let’s work together to make September 1 a record-setting day of letter writing to boost voter turnout in Virginia!
To prepare for World Letter Writing Day, please visit your dashboard to “adopt” Democratic-leaning Virginia voters.
VOTING – POSTCARDS TO SWING STATES
IMPORTANT: The Postal Service is increasing postcard stamp prices on August 29th. The price will go up to $0.40 from the current $0.36. Here are a couple important things to know:
You can use postcard stamps forever regardless of their current price, just like Forever Stamps.
The easiest way to stock up on postcard stamps before the price increase is to buy them online from USPS here. You can also buy them from your local post office.
Prices for Forever Stamps also go up on September 29th, from $0.55 to $0.58.
Please SIGN UP to write postcards to make sure Democrats come out and vote. We’ll send you the postcards, addresses and instructions for free. You provide $0.36 stamps and mail the cards. A number of campaigns are available on the website.
With the help of volunteers like you, we wrote 21 million postcards in 2020, and we saw incredible results! Voters who receive handwritten postcards are significantly more likely to vote. You can help us keep New Jersey and Virginia blue!

SIERRA CLUB VIRGINIA CAMPAIGN
Tomorrow, we are switching our focus to the next climate champion on our list ‒ Rodney Willett. A health and education advocate hailing from a family of teachers, Willett has been serving as the Delegate for Virginia’s 40th district since 2020. Since then, his pro-environment votes in the Virginia legislature and his work towards passing the historic Virginia Clean Economy Act have earned him an A rating from the Sierra

OTHER LETTERS/PETITIONS/CALLS

Katy Gurin writes: I was just phonebanking to folks in Sinemas district (she’s a swing vote in the senate), and it was great. You’re calling Sierra Club members and supporters of the Act, so they’re very friendly and informed. I got two people to call in under 30 minutes– they just needed a little bit of a nudge. Once you’re trained you can call whenever the dialer is open.

SIERRA CLUB
We’re living in the climate crisis. At Sierra Club, we’re fighting everyday to see us through it. We must fight back against the destruction of our environment that has helped land us in the humanitarian crisis of climate change that we are facing today. Coal mining and oil and gas drilling on our public lands — our national parks, grasslands, monuments and roadless and wildlands — account for 25% of all U.S. climate pollution. We can change that. These are our public lands and we have a say in how they get used. Help us ensure public lands are part of the climate solution. SEPARATE REQUEST |
President Biden has called for Treasury Secretary Yellen and other financial regulators to address the climate risks that imperil our economy. Secretary Yellen has a major report coming soon that we hope will lay out bold actions to address the climate threats to our economy, including Wall Street’s risky fossil fuel investments — but she needs to hear from us now.

Here are some of the bills we’re calling on the Governor to sign:

- SB 343, AB 1276, AB 962, AB 881, and AB 1201 to help reduce plastic pollution and increase transparency in recycling to protect our ocean, marine life, health, coastal economy, and climate
- AB 1238 to decriminalize jaywalking, address associated historic injustices, and make streets more walkable
- SB 406 to increase transparency regarding regulation of oil and gas production, including making more information available to the public on the state’s website
- AB 896 to help ensure that regulators have the authority they need to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for cleaning up oil wells no longer in use.
SIERRA CLUB BRITISH COLUMBIA
The province received a detailed three-year plan for a paradigm shift from the Old Growth Panel in 2020 and promised to implement all of it. One year later almost all old-growth remains open for logging.
The time for talk-and-log has ended. British Columbians have waited all summer for interim protection for at-risk intact forests, funding for Indigenous-led conservation and a just transition that leaves no community behind. This court decision is a wake-up call, the B.C. government must act now. Send them a letter today.
SIERRA CLUB
After it became clear that progressive Democrats were holding firm, House leaders decided to delay a vote on the inadequate bipartisan infrastructure bill that would have put Build Back Better in jeopardy. Now let’s keep up the momentum until we win!
Send an email or make a call to Congress! If you’re ready to get more involved, join next week’s virtual action night or phone bank.
