350 Humboldt has a general meeting every 4th Thursday at 6pm on Zoom. Since most of our work is done in committees, it is a chance for people to see others in the group and for those who get our action alerts to come and meet active members in person – just check things out. This month we will focus on committee reports, as they have been put at the bottom of the agenda for several months so have been cut or skimped. We also usually do a quick action, like signing a petition. But on Thursday we will walk  through how to submit a letter to legislative committees supporting or opposing specific climate bills. It is not hard and it gives your voice a lot of impact, especially when you write about things you know a lot about or have personal experiences relevant to the bill.

We hope to see you at 6pm this Thursday. The Zoom link and full agenda are below.

Land Acknowledgement: 350 Humboldt would like to acknowledge that where we live and hold our meetings in Humboldt County is on unceded territory and the ancestral homeland of indigenous nations which include Tolowa, Hupa, Karuk, Mattole, Wailaki, Wiyot, and Yurok.

We thank indigenous nations who have been caretakers of the land. Additionally, we recognize that the well-being of all people is bound up with that of indigenous peoples, and we must all take action on the climate.”

This month our commitment to the caretakers of the land requires that we contribute to the Karuk Tribe. In January President Biden signed into law an act to place into trust for the Tribe the 1,000 acres the Karuk call the Center of the World. Previously it was managed by the US Forest Service. We will support the Karuk Tribe in managing the land and hope that it is just a start toward regaining the one million acres in the Karuk ancestral territory that is now controlled by the Forest Service. [350 Humboldt will send a $50 check to Joshua Saxon, Executive Director, Karuk Tribe.  PO Box 1016, Happy Camp, CA. 96039. (530) 493-1600  http://www.karuk.us ]

(Chase and Wells Fargo in Humboldt). The Humboldt Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship Climate Action Campaign is planning an action. 350 Humboldt has a new-ish bus project which aims to promote bus ridership by planning fun bus outings combined with lunch, hiking, whatever else we think of that would be fun. We get to meet in-person (not on a screen), talk about climate work or just get to know each other and enjoy the day. We hope to lower barriers to bus riding by doing it together and sharing knowledge of how to do it.

-We have done 2 adventures so far with about 6 people/trip

We rode the Arcata system and then went out to lunch

We rode to Hikshari Trail, hiked and had a picnic

Next trip is Thursday, March 2–lunch in Old Town-JOIN US!!!

-My hope is to organize an adventure about once/month.

-I would like to combine the bus rides with lunches, hikes, bike rides, Arts Alive. Open to other ideas. HTA said we might be able to come to their yard and practice loading bikes if there is interest.

It would be great to have a planning partner. Anyone interested? The time investment is minimal. The pay-off is incorporating fun into climate work. Contact Cathy Chandler-Klein

·      Combo: Legislative Team, Letters Team and Quick Action – Dan

The Letters Team is in a lull for Get Out The Vote, so we learned how to submit support or opposition letters to legislative committees hearing a bill. Our quick action tonight is for everyone to write a letter to the legislature about a bill of their choice.  Go here for a set of guidelines to follow. If you have troubles, please report so we can help others too and change the guidelines.
