A lot is happening in Egypt right now. The country is in a state of political transition following the 18-day uprising that forced Hosni Mubarak to resign from power, after 30 years of authoritarian rule. Many might think that the revolution is over by the departure of Mubarak, but his departure only marks the beginning of a long process to bring along lasting change to the country.
On Friday, May 27th thousands gathered in Tahrir to push along this process of reform, and on that same day, 20 Egyptian youth came together in a workshop North of Cairo, to get us closer to averting the climate crisis.
Last weekend, these young climate leaders joined a 3-day workshop that we co-organized with the DEMENA Climate Ambassador Program in Egypt, at the Wadi Environmental Science Center (WESC), a beautiful and innovative outdoor education center–situated in the middle of an olive farm — where children learn by experimenting, discovering, and asking questions about problems in environmental science and sustainability.
Egypt's Nile Delta is one of the top three areas on the planet most vulnerable to a rise in sea levels, and its food security and water resources are also at risk. So it's no surprise that these young people who come from a revolutionary generation — a generation that used peaceful protest to unhinge the foundations of an authoritarian regime — are also eager to build a sustainable future for their country and to protect it from the threats posed by climate change.
Those young people not only deepened their common knowledge of the science and acquired new organizing skills, but most importantly they enthusiastically planned for their upcoming roles as catalysts for change in their communities. They're planning exciting things that include a 2-month long grassroots climate caravan that will be traveling through Egypt to spread awareness about climate-related water issues, culminating in their involvement in a big Moving Planet event in Cairo on September 24th.
Though this workshop is over, much like those exciting 18-days in Egypt, the real work now begins for these young revolutionaries – to rebuild a country and to push for a movement that will protect their future and the future of all generations to come.
إن مصرالأن فى فترة حراك سياسى و قد يظن الكثيرون أن الثورة المصرية قد انتهت برحيل مبارك عن السلطة ولكن رحيله كان مجرد بداية لمرحلة جديدة هدفها الوصول إلى تغيير شامل و حقيقى.
و حيث أن سلسلة التغيرات السياسية ما زالت فى طورها الأول، قد احتشد الألاف يوم الجمعة الماضى الموافق ٢٧ مايو ٢٠١١ فى تظاهرة للتأكيد على مطالب الثورة و فى نفس الوقت اجتمع عشرون شابا وشابة فى ورشة عمل شمال القاهرة للعمل على الوصول إلى هدف منع كارثة تغير المناخ من التحقق.
إن دلتا النيل من أكثر الأماكن عرضة لارتفاع مستوى البحرعلى سطح الكوكب بسبب التغيرات المناخية ، بالإضافة إلى أن أمن مصر الغذائي ومواردها المائية فى خطر شديد لنفس السبب . لذلك ليس من المستغرب أن هؤلاء الشباب الذين أتوا من جيل الثورة — هو الجيل الذي إستخدم الاحتجاج السلمى لتفكيك نظام استبدادي — حريصون على بناء مستقبل مستدام لبلدهم وحماية هذا المستقبل من تهديدات تغير المناخ.
هؤلاء الشباب إستفادوا من ورشة العمل وعمقوا معرفتهم بعلوم التغيرات المناخية واكتسبوا مهارات جديدة في العمل الجماعى وتنظيم الحملات ، ولكن الأهم من ذلك انهم خططوا بحماس لدورهم القادم كقادة للتغيير في مجتمعاتهم. خططهم تشمل مشروع قافلة المناخ التى ستسافر عبر مصر لمدة شهرين لنشرالوعي حول قضايا المياه المتصلة بالمناخ ، إنتهاءاَ بالمشاركة فى يوم ٢٤ سبتمبر للتحرك من أجل الكوكب فى القاهرة كجزء من حملة ٣٥٠ العالمية.
فعاليات هذه الورشة ذكرتنا بتلك الأيام ال١٨ المثيرة فى مصر مع بداية ثورة يناير و الأن جاء دور العمل الحقيقي لسفراء المناخ الثوريين و هو إعادة بناء البلاد ودعم لحركة حماية المناخ التي من شأنها حماية مستقبلهم ومستقبل جميع الأجيال القادمة.
