 Electrifying your home:

Two personal stories

Change can be a bit scary, which is why it’s easier if you know someone who’s already done what you’re thinking of doing. So we are pleased to offer two early adopters – one our chapter chair – to share their stories of home electrification.

Our speakers are:
  • Tom Coleman, who has been shifting to electricity over several years at his Naperville home and
  • Derek Eder, who is upgrading his 100-year-old home in Oak Park. When Derek spoke to us last, he had learned his house leaked like a sieve and that he had to seal it up better before buying a heat pump.
Tom is a retired chief information officer, who has turned his full attention to the climate crisis. In addition to chairing Climate Reality Chicago Metro, he’s involved in his hometown’s Naperville Environment and Sustainability Task Force (NEST). Tom put solar on his roof in 2020 and he and his wife both drive EVs. He’ll tell you how he’s saving money with electrification.
Derek has a young family and works as an entrepreneur, technologist and one of the leaders of Chicago’s civic tech community. He is founder and partner at DataMade and is active with the Oak Park Climate Action Network. A couple of years ago he embarked on the adventure of making his old home zero-emission.

After the presentations, we’ll have time for questions and meeting in small groups to share what you have done or are planning or just curious about.
Join us on Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82368969086 and feel free to bring your friends.
