Endorsed Candidate: Melanie DuPont
Candidate for: State Senate, District 22 (Smithfield/Johnston/ N. Providence)
Endorsing committee: CARI Politics Team – Blackstone region

CARI enthusiastically endorses Melanie DuPont for State Senate District 22 (Smithfield). As an experienced activist who has advocated for legislation on reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ issues, Melanie knows her way around the Rhode Island State House. Though she hasn’t held public office, this is her second campaign to unseat the Democratic incumbent in District 22, after her first challenge in the 2018 primary. Inspired to run after realizing her senator’s lack of grasping the urgent need to pass climate legislation in Rhode Island, she decided to run herself to fight for racial, economic and health care equity as they relate to the environmental and climate crisis. Melanie is committed to policy that will justly transition workers from fossil fuel supported jobs to new careers while creating more jobs in the renewable energy sector. She emphasizes the importance of explaining to people how we must invest in a green energy economy now so that Rhode Islanders can reap the benefits of less pollution and lower health care costs in the future.

Volunteering for the Sunrise Movement and earning their endorsement is a source of pride for Melanie.
Participating in CARI activities as well as acting as the elected secretary of the Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus are two other areas of engagement.

With experience as a technical writer and filmmaker she plans to use her excellent communications skills to reach out to constituents and work within the state house to pass the legislation her community calls for. She easily blends her refreshingly straightforward, bluntly honest style with compassion and humor to articulate her positions. CARI is confident that Melanie DuPont shares our goals and that her commitment to moving Rhode Island toward a 100% renewable energy future as rapidly as possible will make her an ideal working partner in the senate.
