January 20, Biden: Stop Fossil Fuels & Declare a Climate emergency — Joye Braun Day of Action 2023
Join us at the Federal Building on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh at 12:30 pm for a rally with speakers and song to honor Joye Braun. Register here.
The rally will be one of the many actions taking place as part of the national Joye Braun Day of Action. An invitation below from Morgan Brings Plenty (Joye’s daughter) and Waniya Locke:
This year, our movement and our world lost Joye Braun, a true warrior and force of nature. We are calling water protectors across Turtle Island to take action in Joye’s honor on January 20th – both Joye’s birthday and the second anniversary of the end of the Keystone XL pipeline. Joye was a fierce defender of Indigenous sovereignty, human rights, and environmental and climate justice. She played an instrumental role in stopping KXL, fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline, elevating the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), and more recently leading the campaign to pressure President Biden to stop fossil fuel projects and declare a climate emergency. Joye dedicated her life to our movement and would want us to keep fighting – and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Our call to action is based on Joye’s demand to President Biden:
“Be a climate warrior not a wimp. Kill the black snakes, reject all fossil fuel projects and declare a climate emergency.”
Check out this great video by Tikkun Olam Films for the Joye Braun Day of Action to get you excited about the importance of the day! See you there!

The NC Carbon Plan that had to be released by the end of year from the NC Utility Commission was released late on December 30, during the holidays and just before New Year’s Eve. As some of us expected, it’s not good with more gas and nuclear and not enough solar, wind, and energy efficiency!

The Federal Reserve has unveiled draft principles that would protect our economy from the climate crisis. But, these principles are just guidelines – we need the Fed to make them a requirement for banks and financial institutions to follow. Our entire banking system needs to divest from the fossil fuel industry and reinvest resources into a clean, just, renewable economy. Tell the Federal Reserve: We need stronger climate action here.
