Even with a pandemic and a big election, the Greater SoCal 350 Legislative Committee has grown this year and done awesome work! Heading into 2021, we are gearing up to get meaningful climate legislation passed in our State so . . . We will be hosting a Legislative training session on ZOOM for anyone who is interested to learn about how our State Legislative Process works!

WHAT: Interactive Legislative Training Session

WHEN: Saturday, November 21, 2021 – 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

1) Overview of California legislative process – presentation and questions
2) Effective Citizen Lobbying – presentation and questions
3) Breakout sessions – practice getting ready for meeting your legislator!

Please join by computer (not phone) so you can see your fellow participants and slides. We will be doing 2 breakouts in separate Zoom rooms which will include research and a mock meeting with a legislator to advocate for a good climate bill!

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

On June 19, 1865, Black communities in Texas finally received the news that they were free.
Juneteenth (June 19th) is a day that honors Black freedom and Black resistance, and centers Black
people’s unique contribution to the struggle for justice in the U.S. This Juneteenth is a rare moment for all communities, including the environmental and environmental justice movement, to proclaim in one voice that Black Lives Matter, and that we won’t tolerate anything less than justice for all people.

Rep. Nanette Barragan (D-CA) and Sen. Jeff Merkley, both fierce climate advocates, hae introduced the Resources for Workforce Investments, not Drilling Act to prohibit the Trump regime from using coronavirus stimulus funds to bail out the fossil fuel industry. Since this pandemic started, Republicans have used coronavirus as an excuse to bail out their campaign donors, let Big Oil destroy our public lands and waters for free, and put tens of billions of government dollars in the hands of those funding the climate crisis. Action Alert: Send comments to CalGEM urging a 2,500 foot setback between oil drilling and homes, schools and other sensitive sites. Deadline: June 10, 2020

Background: Governor Newsom has tasked CalGEM (the state energy agency) with determining whether there should be setbacks for oil and gas extraction (Something which most oil producing states already have.) CalGEM had scheduled public hearings around the state to gather community input but due to the coronavirus they have been canceled. We need the Governor and the State of California to lead by phasing out oil production in places that are suffering most from the impacts of fossil fuel extraction by creating a 2,500-foot health-and-safety buffer zone between fossil-fuel infrastructure and homes, schools and other sensitive sites.

“I urge you to protect communities’ health and safety and our environment in the Public Health State Rulemaking by enacting a statewide 2,500 foot human health and safety buffer between oil operations and places where people live, work and play. The ongoing threats that neighborhood oil drilling poses to our health, local environment and planet are too large a burden for the community.

We need a just transition away from fossil fuels and that should begin by putting an end to drilling where we’re living.”

Public Health Rulemaking

To fulfill its recently strengthened mission to protect public health, safety, and the environment, the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) is undertaking a process to update public health and safety protections for communities near oil and gas production operations. The rulemaking will involve extensive public input and consider the best available science and data to inform new and strengthened protective requirements.

The first step is the following series of pre-rulemaking community meetings to seek public input on the best ways to protect human health through new rules. Concerns shared at these meetings will inform the formal rulemaking. PLEASE NOTE: Public meetings have been cancelled because of COVID19, but you can make comments via email as indicated!!!
