In Justice Kagan\u2019s dissent on the WV vs EPA decision last week, she wrote:<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWhatever else this Court may know about it, it doesn\u2019t have a clue about how to address climate change. And let\u2019s say the obvious: The stakes are high. <\/span><\/div>\n
Yet the Court today prevents Congressionally authorized agency action to curb power plants\u2019 carbon dioxide emissions. The Court appoints itself\u2014instead of congress or the expert agency\u2014the decision maker on climate policy. I cannot think of many things more frightening.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

We\u2019ll have a gathering beginning at 5:30 pm in the courtyard plaza in front of the courthouse before the hearing begins. We\u2019ll begin with some artwork and networking, then shortly after 6, we\u2019ll have a few speakers, before people begin lining up to go inside the courthouse at 7. \u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n

Parking: A parking deck is located next to the courthouse on Dillard St. (3rd level connects via breezeway to the courtroom\u2026or go to ground level to join the rally)<\/div>\n

Public transit: The courthouse is about a 10-minute walk from Durham station, which is served by NC Rail, as well as regional and local buses. Last week\u2019s Supreme Court ruling limiting how the Environmental Protection Agency can regulate carbon emissions from power plants underscores the need for strong state and utility policies along with federal action to reduce greenhouse gases. Public pressure is urgently needed to make sure state governments and utility companies do the right thing.<\/p>\n

Our state is at a critical juncture as we map our transition to a clean energy future. The North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) is holding public hearings across the state and online this summer as they develop a \u201cCarbon Plan\u201d to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 70% by 2030. Join us and partner organizations to demand a clean, affordable energy future!<\/div>\n

At the end of May, Duke Energy released its draft carbon plan. Duke still wants to rely on polluting fossil fuels like fracked gas. NOOOO!!! But it is the NCUC that will craft the final carbon plan. We need to let them know what WE want that plan to look like!<\/div>\n
