Below you will see the beautiful People\u2019s Inauguration Oath many people in NC took on Jan. 23rd around the state as part of the People’s Climate Movement 100 hours of action. Maybe you would like to take this oath on your own, or invite a few friends together in your home at any time! The oath came out of the recent NC Climate Justice Summit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Webster\u2019s Dictionary defines an\u00a0<\/span>inauguration<\/span>\u00a0as \u201ca formal ceremony or special event to mark the beginning of a major public leader’s term of office.\u201d The term, in a less formal context, \u201ccan also be used to be refer to the\u00a0<\/span>beginning or introduction of a new system, policy, or period<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today we are joining with communities<\/span>\u00a0across North Carolina and the nation to embody the latter part of that definition. We join together to usher in an equitable, life-sustaining economic and social\u00a0<\/span>system. \u00a0<\/span>Because our representative democracy is failing us, we call forth a new\u00a0<\/span>period<\/span>\u00a0of direct democracy of the people, by the people, for the well-being of all.\u00a0 The enormity of climate change, white supremacy, corporate corruption and political upheaval demands that we now stand up for the people, places and planet we love.<\/span><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore, we affirm\u00a0<\/span>our power and authority<\/span>\u00a0to make our communities places where everyone thrives by taking this\u00a0oath<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE\u00a0OATH<\/span>–If you are willing and able, please<\/span>\u00a0stand, place your hand over heart, and repeat after me.<\/span><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

[Note: If possible, have several people read each part out loud, each one taking a different sentence.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This mark \/\/ indicates a place where the speaker should pause so that people can repeat each phrase.<\/span>]<\/span><\/div>\n

I vow to myself and each of you:<\/span><\/div>\n
–To honor the beauty and diversity of the Web of Life\u00a0<\/span>\/\/\u00a0<\/span>upon which my survival depends<\/span><\/div>\n
–To practice the values of\u00a0<\/span>compassion, generosity, gratitude\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0equity and inclusion<\/span><\/div>\n
–To stand for justice and\u00a0<\/span>uphold individual and collective rights\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0particularly for those who have been most harmed:<\/span>\u00a0\/\/\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Indigenous Peoples\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0immigrants \u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0LGBTQ+ people\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0Muslims\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0people of color \u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0people with disabilities\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0women\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0elders\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0and children<\/span><\/div>\n
–To support localized economies and living wages\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0and safe working conditions for all workers<\/span><\/div>\n
–To promote access for all people to quality healthcare and education\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0healthy food, clean water and affordable housing<\/span><\/div>\n
–To work for a just transition to renewable energy\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0and an immediate end to all fossil fuels<\/span><\/div>\n
–To address climate change threats\u00a0<\/span>\/\/<\/span>\u00a0and strengthen the social, economic, and ecological resilience of our communities<\/span><\/div>\n
–T<\/span>o preserve, protect and defend\u00a0<\/span>\/\/\u00a0<\/span>the people, places and planet that we love<\/span><\/div>\n
