On Thursday, April 21st from 6-7 p.m., 350.org Santa Barbara will host a conversation with White Buffalo Land Trust (WBLT) a non-profit that is leading the way locally in regenerative agriculture. After a multi-year, multi-stakeholder negotiation, WBLT is now the steward of the Jalama Canyon Ranch where they are healing the land through regenerative practices such as choosing a combination of climate appropriate crops and selected livestock that work in symbiotic harmony. A well-known example of these practices forms the heart of the documentary, The Biggest Little Farm, an audience favorite at the SB Film Festival in 2019.

WBLT also preaches what it practices by educating and partnering with a diverse group of people and institutions interested in regenerative agriculture. They’ve offered programs for K-12 students to better understand the inter-dependence of human health with a robust eco-system, and they’ve educated farmers and ranchers in courses ranging from ecological monitoring to holistic planned grazing. The non-profit also has a research division that consistently monitors implementation and outcomes of its methods. Production of their Figure Ate food brand completes the circle of research, implementation, and education, and allows them to forge “an ever-expanding network of aligned producers and customers.”

In his book, Regeneration, Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation, environmentalist Paul Hawken notes that one of the outcomes of regenerative agriculture “is the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, resulting in significant increases in the carbon content of healthy soils. Regenerative agriculture has become the archetype and template for regeneration in general.”
