The New Yorker.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-dropcap has-dropcap__lead-standard-heading\">It\u2019s been a truly awful few days for the fossil-fuel industry, which is another way of saying that it\u2019s been an unexpectedly good few days for planet Earth: a trio of sweeping and unlikely victories have demonstrated the depth of great organizing and the increasing weakness of the industry\u2019s hold on our political system.<\/p>\n<p>First, on Sunday, Duke Energy and Dominion Energy\u2014enormous Southeast utilities\u2014announced that they were <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/companies-cancel-atlantic-coast-pipeline-after-years-of-delays-11593975601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/companies-cancel-atlantic-coast-pipeline-after-years-of-delays-11593975601&quot;}\">scrapping<\/a> plans for the Atlantic Coast natural-gas pipeline, despite having invested $3.4 billion in the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>On Monday came the news that a federal court had <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/elanagross\/2020\/07\/06\/court-orders-dakota-access-pipeline-to-shut-down-pending-environmental-review\/#701005f2459c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/elanagross\/2020\/07\/06\/court-orders-dakota-access-pipeline-to-shut-down-pending-environmental-review\/#701005f2459c&quot;}\">ruled in favor<\/a> of the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes, who have been fighting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/tech\/annals-of-technology\/trumps-pipeline-and-americas-shame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dakota Access Pipeline<\/a>. In this case, the pipeline has already been built, and is carrying oil.
