{"id":3342,"date":"2020-04-27T14:27:13","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T14:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/world.350.org\/pittsburgh-2020\/?p=3342"},"modified":"2020-04-27T14:27:13","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T14:27:13","slug":"under-cover-of-pandemic-fossil-fuel-interests-unleash-lobbying-frenzy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.350.org\/pittsburgh\/under-cover-of-pandemic-fossil-fuel-interests-unleash-lobbying-frenzy\/","title":{"rendered":"Under Cover of Pandemic, Fossil Fuel Interests Unleash Lobbying Frenzy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/user\/ddrugmand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dana Drugmand<\/a> \u2022 Thursday, April 2, 2020, DESMOG.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Americans are dying, millions have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/apr\/02\/us-unemployment-coronavirus-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed for unemployment<\/a>, and frontline health care workers are risking their lives as the coronavirus pandemic sweeps across the <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span> In the midst of this crisis, the fossil fuel industry, particularly the oil and gas sector, has been actively seeking both financial relief and deregulation or dismantling of environmental protection\u00a0measures.<\/p>\n<p>A new briefing by <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span>-based think tank InfluenceMap summarizes this <a href=\"https:\/\/influencemap.org\/report\/The-Coronavirus-Crisis-and-Climate-Lobbying-23249d39450ff19b441090a6a50174eb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fossil fuel lobbying during the time of the pandemic<\/a>, pointing to specific examples of how fossil fuel interests around the world are using the cover of the coronavirus crisis to advance their\u00a0agenda.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., the top oil and gas producer in the world, this activity has been particularly pronounced. While the oil and gas sector is struggling amid\u00a0plummeting prices and demand, the struggle is due to factors far beyond the pandemic, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2020\/03\/30\/pandemic-relief-stimulus-petroleum-industry-slush-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mostly of the industry\u2019s own making<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many shale companies had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/finances-fracking-shale-industry-drills-more-debt-profit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amassed large debts<\/a> that allowed them to rapidly spend and expand production, for example.
