According to the report they released last June 20, entitled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/reports\/dangerous-ground\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Dangerous Ground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, documented that 185 killings of environmental activists around the world last year, nearly 60 percent more than in 2014 and the highest since it began collecting data dating back to 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The findings of this report is attested with the recent killing of another environmental defender in Bataan, a province situated in the Central Luzon region, of the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/793909\/anti-coal-advocate-shot-dead-in-bataan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the evening of July 1, the life of Gloria Capitan, a staunch anti-coal advocate, who led community in opposing a coal storage plant project near their neighborhood in Mariveles, Bataan came violent end.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46535\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46535\" class=\"wp-image-46535 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567020_1206695386021288_4221801482318959378_n.jpg\" alt=\"13567020_1206695386021288_4221801482318959378_n\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gloria, holds a postcard demanding justice for Jennifer Laude, a Filipino transwoman who was murdered by an American military serviceman, Joseph Pemberton, who was in the Philippines to participate in joint Philippine &amp; US military exercises in 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ate Glo, to people close to her, and to those who&#8217;ve had the privilege of working with her remember her friendliness and for having a genuine smile that met me many times whenever we have an activity or site visit at Lucanin, Mariveles, Bataan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was the president of Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Mamamayan ng Lucanin, a community-based organization that resisted the construction of a coal plant and open storage facility by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sea Front Shipyard Services Incorporated which is owned by Limay Bulk and Handling Terminal, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 57 years old she was very active in the fight against coal, and even led her village last year in a series of mass actions and petitions calling for a permanent closure of the coal storage facility. For a living she ran a small karaoke cantina &#8211;the very place where her life was cut short last July 1, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kilusanpilipinas\/photos\/a.202657743122506.49269.139065272815087\/1026892217365717\/?type=3&amp;theater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when she was approached at shot in the neck by motorcycle riding gunmen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/interaksyon.com\/article\/129864\/anti-coal-woman-activist-in-bataan-gunned-down-family-appeals-to-duterte-for-justice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while her 8 year-old grandson suffered a minor injury \u00a0from a stray bullet on his arm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this is a message to silence other anti-coal activist like her, then they are mistaken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because on the ground where Ate Glo&#8217;s body fell, where the blood from her body flows more anti-coal activists will sprout. Instead of silencing us, it will only strengthen our convictions, that the evil menace of coal must end. And we will persevere in this fight and see to it that our children and the children of our children will be free from it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Justice for Gloria!
