{"id":4414,"date":"2022-04-01T17:49:06","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T09:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/world.350.org\/philippines\/?p=4414"},"modified":"2022-04-01T18:02:02","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T10:02:02","slug":"sos-solutions-for-survivors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.350.org\/philippines\/sos-solutions-for-survivors\/","title":{"rendered":"SOS: Solutions for Survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On February 28th, 2022, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest report on climate impacts. The report presents the most comprehensive scientific overview of the climate impacts that communities around the world are facing because of the continuous exploitation of fossil fuels. It is devastating as climate change is already being felt in every corner of the world.<\/p>\n<p>But communities in Asia and the Pacific show no interest in giving up. Here are some of their actions in response to the report:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solar Scholar, Solidarity among Survivors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fiji and the Philippines continue to face storms supercharged by warming seas and creeping climate impacts. But survivor communities are paying it forward by reaching out across the ocean to empower other survivors by lighting up communities across the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PW3s1xPUMys\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" align=\"centre\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Two solar charging systems were set up by the Solar Scholars\u2019 initiative that was established after Super-typhoon Haiyan slammed the Philippines. The modular power stations are the outcome of the <a href=\"https:\/\/icsc.ngo\/climate-change-survivors-pay-it-forward-in-ph-and-pacific\/\"><strong>Solar Scholars training<\/strong><\/a> in Tacloban, Leyte, and Suva, Fiji held online from February 22 to 24. Two community representatives from Samar and Leyte\u2013supported by the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities \u2013 trained representatives from the climate group 350.org Pacific and the Christian organization Pacific Conference of Churches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_169703\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169703\" class=\"wp-image-169703\" src=\"https:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/20220222_PCW_Solar_Scholars_Tac_KLL_02-700x467.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-169703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ICSC staff and solar scholars in Tacloban, Philippines share their expertise on solar power system with Pacific Climate Warriors participants in Fiji via online training.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years, as we faced the same destruction in the face of intense cyclones, we\u2019ve learned a lot and were able to equip ourselves. It has been a continuous phase of rebuilding. This training has been a light at the end of the tunnel. We can give hope to our people,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/c58NYH18jc\/\">350 Pacific <\/a>Organizer, George Nacewa, one of the new Solar Scholars in Fiji.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Climate Conversations to Direct Action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>350 Japan hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/350jp.org\/event0313\/\"><strong>IPCC special event<\/strong><\/a> on March 13th, inviting an IPCC scientist Dr. Seita Emori and climate impacts frontliners to talk about climate impacts and actions. This event attracted more than 500 audiences to take climate actions, such as Global Climate Action on March 25th and the Bank campaign towards Annual General Meetings in June.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-169704\" src=\"https:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/JP-Webinar.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the session, there is also a movie screening of <a href=\"https:\/\/350jp.org\/people-power\/\">People Power<\/a>, a short documentary about several activists in Japan involved in the climate movement organizing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students Say No to Coal Funding\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says that the amount of weather-related disasters around the world has increased fivefold in the last 50 years. The most significant contributor to the worsening of the climate crisis is coal pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Many banks and financial institutions around the world have already committed to stop funding the coal industry. Unfortunately, the state-owned banks in Indonesia are still supporting this rogue industry with people\u2019s money. One of them is <a href=\"https:\/\/bersihkanbankmu.org\/\">Bank Nasional Indonesia<\/a> (BNI).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-169706\" src=\"https:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/BNI1-700x700.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students and communities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CbIJGw1vPBX\/\">6 cities in Indonesia<\/a> joined forces to urge BNI to immediately stop funding fossil energy. They also showcase art performances and exhibitions signifying the power of <a href=\"https:\/\/art.350.org\/\"><strong>artivism<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-169705\" src=\"https:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/BNI2-700x700.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<p><strong>Navigating Climate Grief amid Movement-building<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several climate conversations are being held by 350 Asia together with their regional partners, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/spaces\/1vOGwygLLNNxB\">Twitter Space<\/a> that tackled how we organise and build power in the intricate path toward climate justice.<\/p>\n<p>As the activists tend to work overtime, involve themselves in emotionally demanding situations, and face a lack of visible results and acknowledgment, it is not surprising that many activists get exhausted from time to time. 350 Asia initiated a Community Care Call to speak about navigating climate grief, activism burnout, and holding their movements close.<\/p>\n<p>Joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/disharavii\">Disha Ravi<\/a> (Fridays for Future), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anamrathor\">Anam Rathor<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/climateactionpk\">Climate Action Now Pakistan<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ajoenii\">Aroe Ajoeni<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/klimaactionmalaysia.org\">Klima Action Malaysia<\/a>), Krishna Ariola (<a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/y4chph\">Youth for Climate Hope<\/a>), and moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/beatulagan\">Beatrice Tulagan<\/a>, 350 Asia Regional Organizing Specialist, the event went deeper on personal experiences of eco-anxiety, climate grief, and distress, and shared practical tips to cope together and continue to stand in solidarity with each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMental health is very important, and you won\u2019t be able to do anything if you don\u2019t think about that,\u201d says Anam Rathor during the session.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-169707\" src=\"https:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/KAMY-700x493.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"422\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>in Kuala Lumpur, KAMY (Klima Action Malaysia) also held a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.klimaactionmalaysia.org\/post\/climate-circle-ipcc-moment\"><strong>Climate Circle<\/strong><\/a> that discussed the recent climate impacts report and brought together activists in Malaysia to share their perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>#PeopleNotProfit Strike Around Asia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The IPCC report already suggests that the world is facing real consequences of a climate crisis that is costing lives, destroying nature, worsening food production, and hindering economic growth. On March 25th, people from all over the world, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/fridaysforfuture.org\/march25\/\">Fridays for Future\u2019s Global Climate Strike Action<\/a>, once again took to the streets their calls for climate justice. From 2019 until 2022, we already did 85 climate strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-169709\" src=\"https:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/BINDU-700x315.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"315\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BINDU Women are urging their government gender-climate justice such as sustainable embankment construction, shutting down all coal power projects under implementation and planning, and a 100% renewable energy system<\/p>\n<p>We will continue to build solidarity and fight for climate justice.
