Ariel Dorfman has spent his life all over the globe, but always near the center of world literature. In the early 1970s he served as cultural advisor to Chilean president Salvador Allende, until a US-backed coup drove him into exile. You can read about the experience of that dislocation in his classic Heading North, Looking South. <\/i>He writes poetry, essays, novels; his plays have been widely performed; and here he shows he’s a master of that new genre, the 350-word piece. Oh dear Oh dear Oh dear<\/p>\n

What should I do?<\/p>\n

The polar bears are dying out.<\/p>\n

Oh dear Oh dear<\/p>\n

The children cannot breathe.<\/p>\n

What should I do?<\/p>\n

The elephants have nowhere<\/p>\n

to flee.<\/p>\n

The elephants Oh dear it’s true.<\/p>\n

What should I<\/p>\n

can I<\/p>\n

must I do?<\/p>\n

Oh dear Oh<\/p>\n

Three Five O<\/p>\n

Oh dear that scares me scares me so<\/p>\n

Oh dear we won’t survive<\/p>\n

Three Five O up in the sky<\/p>\n

and no more birth<\/p>\n

The seventh extinction is on its way.<\/p>\n
