{"id":18240,"date":"2010-07-19T12:53:32","date_gmt":"2010-07-19T12:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/world.350.org\/ja\/2010\/07\/19\/5-more-countries-helping-lead-way\/"},"modified":"2010-07-19T12:53:32","modified_gmt":"2010-07-19T12:53:32","slug":"5-more-countries-helping-lead-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.350.org\/ja\/5-more-countries-helping-lead-way\/","title":{"rendered":"5 more countries helping lead the way!"},"content":{"rendered":"<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2610\/4036595555_606a7c4bb4.jpg\" style=\"width: 500px;border-width: 0px;border-style: solid;margin: 5px 10px\" \/>\n<p><em>Photo: 4700 school children in Male&#039; Maldives on 17 October, 2009.&nbsp; Organized by<br \/>\nECOCARE, the Maldives Photographers Association, Maldives Girl Guides<br \/>\nAssociation, and the Scouts Association of Maldives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We ended last week&#039;s blog with a bit of somber note regarding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.350.org\/about\/blogs\/how-close-are-we-really\">US leadership (or lack thereof) on climate change<\/a>, but this week we can start things off with some much more uplifting news&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend the &quot;Cartagena Group \/ Dialogue for Progressive Action&quot; met in the Maldives to discuss new ways forward towards an ambitious outcome at the <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\" target=\"_blank\">UNFCCC<\/a> and plans for becoming or remaining low-carbon emitters.&nbsp; The Maldives has already been leading the charge with a commetment to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.350.org\/about\/blogs\/maldives-first-country-go-carbon-neutral\">carbon-neutral in 10 years<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.350.org\/maldives\">President Nasheed<\/a> has already joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/PutSolarOn.It\" target=\"_blank\">PutSolarOn.It<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.350.org\/campaigns\/1010\">10\/10\/10<\/a> campaigns by planning to add solar panels to the President&#039;s office as part of the path towards carbon neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>Now, 5 more countries are making bold commitments to either carbon neutrality or low carbon pathways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Maldives and Costa Rica reaffirmed commitments to carbon neutrality by 2020 and 2021, respectively.<\/li>\n<li>The Marshall Islands pledged to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 40% by 2020, from a 2009 base year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Antigua &amp; Barbuda aims to slash emissions by one quarter by 2020, from 1990 levels.<\/li>\n<li>Ethiopia plans to be become carbon neautral by 2025.<\/li>\n<li>And Samoa also commited to reach carbon neautrality by 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that is what <em>real<\/em> climate leadership looks like!&nbsp; It&#039;s heart-wrenching that it&#039;s mostly countries that have had little to nothing to do with the current levels of CO2 in the atmostphere, and it&#039;s also inspiring!<\/p>\n<p>And it&#039;s particularly exciting to know that the countries understand not just significance of these measures in fighting climate change, but also the benefits of such actions.&nbsp; As President Nasheed put it, &quot;These developing countries are pursuing low carbon growth and green development because it is in their fundamental economic and security interests to do so.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps those of us in some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatpowerrace.org\" target=\"_blank\">larger pollutting and more powerful countries<\/a>, can learn from these countries and begin to match their ambition in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.350.org\/campaigns\/1010\">getting to work<\/a> to reach 350!<\/p>\n<p><em>Participants at the &#039;Cartagena Group \/ Dialogue for Progressive Action&#039; in the Maldives were: Antigua &amp; Barbuda, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Malawi, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Samoa, Spain, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Uruguay, UK and the European Commission.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2610\/4036595555_606a7c4bb4.jpg\" style=\"width: 500px;border-width: 0px;border-style: solid;margin: 5px 10px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18240","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>5 more countries helping lead the way!
