Microplastics lurk in nearly every corner of the globe. Scientists have found the tiny particles in <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.waterdata.usgs.gov\/visualizations\/microplastics\/index.html\">rivers and lakes<\/a>,<br \/>\n in agricultural soil and in the oceans. They have infiltrated our food<br \/>\nand water, cleaning products and cosmetics, even our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2025\/02\/03\/microplastics-human-brain-increase\/\">bodies<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-026-02620-1\">new study<\/a><br \/>\n published Monday that finds these minuscule pieces of plastic &mdash;<br \/>\nparticularly ones of various colors &mdash; are contributing to heating the<br \/>\natmosphere. Drew<br \/>\n Shindell, a Duke University earth science professor and co-author of<br \/>\nthe study in Nature Climate Change, said many questions remain about the<br \/>\n precise impacts, but the new findings show that on the whole, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2026\/01\/04\/microplastics-science-discoveries\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\">microplastics<\/a> in the atmosphere are likely absorbing more heat than they are reflecting. \u201cWe<br \/>\n can say with confidence that overall they are warming agents,\u201d Shindell<br \/>\n said in an interview. \u201cTo me, that\u2019s the big advance.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If deforestation and global warming continue unchecked, the Amazon rainforest could begin a gradual transition to a degraded, grassland-like ecosystem in just a few decades. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10456-0\">new study<\/a> examines a known consequence of deforestation in the Amazon: it can create a<br \/>\nfeedback loop that reduces rainfall and causes even more trees to die.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s because trees in the rainforest act as a kind of weather machine<br \/>\nby sucking up water from the ground with their roots and releasing<br \/>\nmoisture into the air through their leaves. When<br \/>\n trees are lost on a large scale, the regional climate becomes drier and<br \/>\n other effects of climate change, like drought and wildfire, become more<br \/>\n dangerous. The study&#8217;s model showed widespread transitions (from sink to emissions source) across the Amazon basin at deforestation<br \/>\nlevels of 22\u221228% combined with global warming levels of 1.5\u20131.9\u2009\u00b0C. Microsoft singled out \u201cgrowth-related factors such as AI and cloud expansion\u201d as reasons behind the surge in emissions.<a href=\"https:\/\/energynow.com\/2026\/05\/microsoft-may-abandon-its-clean-energy-powered-data-centre-targets\/\">Microsoft Corp. may shelve one of the industry\u2019s most ambitious clean-energy targets<\/a> as it tries to remove hurdles that could hold it back in the race to power data centers, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
