The<br \/>\n finding could significantly affect assessments of the future impacts of<br \/>\n global heating and the effects on coastal settlements. Globally,<br \/>\n the research found ocean levels are an average of 11.8 inches higher than<br \/>\npreviously believed, but in some areas of the global south, including<br \/>\nsouth-east Asia and the Indo-Pacific, they may be 39-59 inches higher than<br \/>\npreviously thought. Compared with previous assumptions of coastal sea level, the measured<br \/>\n values suggest that with a hypothetical 39 inches (1\u2009m) of relative sea-level rise,<br \/>\n 31\u201337% more land and 48\u201368% more people (increasing estimates to 77\u2013132<br \/>\n million) would fall below sea level. [The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10196-1\">study<\/a> itself is much more interesting than this summary.] <\/li>\n<li>Planetary warming has significantly accelerated over the past 10 years, with temperatures rising at a higher rate since 2015 than in any previous decade on record, a new study showed. The Earth warmed around 0.35C (0.62F) in the decade to 2025, compared to just under 0.2C per decade on average between 1970 and 2015, according to a paper published on Friday in the scientific journal <em>Geophysical Research Letters<\/em>. This is the first statistically significant evidence of an acceleration of global warming, the authors said. Global warming has accelerated and is now happening twice as fast as in previous decades, meaning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2406034-major-climate-tipping-points-could-be-triggered-within-a-decade\/\">major climate catastrophes<\/a> could happen sooner than expected. Earth was warming by about 0.18\u00b0C per decade prior to 2013-14. Since<br \/>\nthen, it has been heating up by about 0.36\u00b0C per decade, according to an<br \/>\n analysis by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pik-potsdam.de\/members\/stefan\/homepage\">Stefan Rahmstorf<\/a> at the University of Potsdam, Germany, and his colleagues.
