One important removal pathway is CH<sub>4<\/sub> oxidation in the stratosphere, which also produces water vapor and reactive chemicals that affect climate and ozone. Until now, estimates of the stratospheric CH<sub>4<\/sub> loss have relied only on models. Using satellite observations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2529774123\">we provide an observationally based estimate, showing that models systematically underestimate this loss<\/a>. Incorporating our result into the global methane budget greatly reduces existing imbalances, helping reconcile top-down and bottom-up estimates and improving confidence in methane-climate assessments.<\/li>\n<li>A science journalist explains <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2026\/02\/covid-19-cleared-the-skies-but-also-supercharged-methane-emissions\/?\">here<\/a> the paradox that reducing air pollution also cuts the hydroxyl radicals that eliminate methane in the atmosphere. That\u2019s enough to flood low-lying cities and displace millions of people.<\/li>\n<li>Using nearly a quarter million Landsat satellite images spanning 36<br \/>\nyears, NASA scientists have confirmed for the first time that Earth&#8217;s boreal<br \/>\nforest&mdash;the planet&#8217;s largest forested biome&mdash;is shifting northward,<br \/>\nrevealing unprecedented changes in this critical ecosystem that stores<br \/>\nmore than a third of the world&#8217;s carbon and helps regulate our global<br \/>\nclimate. The initial round totaled more than $160 million<br \/>\n in EV funding. ComEd credits the program with stimulating the<br \/>\ninstallation of more than 10,000 new EV chargers across Illinois.<\/li>\n<li>China\u2019s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions fell by 1% in the final<br \/>\nquarter of 2025, likely securing a decline of 0.3% for the full year as a<br \/>\n whole. This extends a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-chinas-co2-emissions-have-now-been-flat-or-falling-for-18-months\/\">flat or falling<\/a>\u201d trend in China\u2019s CO2 emissions that began in March 2024 and has now lasted for nearly two years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-chinas-co2-emissions-have-now-been-flat-or-falling-for-21-months\/\">The new analysis<\/a> for Carbon Brief shows that, in 2025, emissions from<br \/>\n fossil fuels increased by an estimated 0.1%, but this was more than<br \/>\noffset by a 7% decline in CO2 from cement. The 2009 \u201cendangerment finding\u201d concluded that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and welfare, calling for cuts to emissions from power plants and vehicle tailpipes.
