The scientists said more than half of the world\u2019s large<br \/>\nlakes have shrunk since the 1990s. About 35% of the planet\u2019s natural<br \/>\nwetlands, nearly the size of the European Union in total, have been<br \/>\nwiped out since the 1970s. Excessive pumping of groundwater has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2025-09-03\/global-drying-groundwater-depletion\" style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\">long-term declines<\/a><br \/>\n in about 70% of the world\u2019s major aquifers, and in many areas these<br \/>\ndeclines are causing the land to sink. Land subsidence linked to<br \/>\ngroundwater overpumping, the report says, is occurring across more than<br \/>\n2.3 million square miles, nearly 5% of the global land area. This<br \/>\npermanently reduces what the aquifers can hold and also worsens the risk<br \/>\n of flooding. <\/p>\n<p>GREENING<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On Saturday, the High Seas Treaty (officially known as the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction or BBNJ Agreement) came into force. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the most important environmental agreements ever,\u201d says marine-policy expert Matt Frost.
