Another 12 fracking permits were just approved in California. Gavin Newsom continues to break his promises and add to the legacy of environmental racism in California.<\/p>\n

Last month, we set a goal of submitting 25,000 public comments against neighborhood oil drilling with our partners and we blew that goal out of the water thanks to you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With your help, our movement submitted over 40,000 comments and thousands of people testified calling for a 2,500 foot health and safety buffer zone between oil wells and our homes and schools. This is huge, but it\u2019s still up to Gavin Newsom to act \u2013 and so far he continues to break his promises. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the middle of the COVID-19 crisis and amidst a massive movement calling for racial justice, the state issued another 12 new fracking permits for Aera Energy to expand drilling in the Central Valley, which already suffers from some of the worst air pollution in the nation. That\u2019s on top of the 24 fracking permits issued in April, also to Aera Energy in Kern County.1<\/sup><\/p>\n

Governor Newsom said during his campaign that he supported banning fracking, but has not done so. Approving new permits during a global health crisis in areas that are already ground zero for environmental racism is unthinkable.<\/p>\n

The same racist systems that have policed and killed Black and Brown bodies have polluted Black and Brown communities for far too long. They\u2019ve created decades of physical and mental health disparities that have led to higher death rates among people of color from COVID-19. That\u2019s why our fight against COVID-19, fossil fuels, and white supremacy are deeply connected. <\/strong><\/p>\n

All of us, together, must take action to dismantle white supremacy \u2013 that includes the fossil fuel industry. We can start by forcing our Governor to stand up to Big Oil and ensure that every California regardless of race or zip code has access to clean air and water.<\/p>\n
