Sacramento \u2014 <\/strong>Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) introduced Senate Bill 260, the Climate Corporate Accountability Act (CCAA). SB 260 would be the first law in the country to require U.S.-based companies \u2014 those doing business in California and generating over $1 billion in gross annual revenue \u2014 to disclose all of their greenhouse gas emissions and set science-based targets to reduce those emissions. SB 260 is co-sponsored by Carbon Accountable, Sunrise Bay Area, and the California League of Conservation Voters. This legislation will hold corporations accountable for their emissions, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the near- and long-term, and help California stay a national leader in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Continued support for building electrification<\/h3>\n

From Pat Carr, 350 Humboldt steering committee member: I virtually attended a CEC meeting today on building electrification. At issue was a CEC plan to develop an all-electric building code by 2025. Rocky Mountain Institute pulled together a group of people, of which I was one of 20, asking that that code be moved up to 2022.<\/p>\n

If you’re interested here’s what I said.<\/p>\n

Thanks for the opportunity to speak today. I\u2019m a resident of Arcata CA in the far north of the state and representing 350 Humboldt.<\/p>\n

I believe that the CEC should adopt a single, all-electric baseline for all building types as soon as possible. All-electric buildings are cheaper to build and operate, better for public health, and critical to protect us from the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

We all know that we need to move swiftly to reduce carbon emissions. We simply dig ourselves a deeper hole if we continue developing new buildings that use natural gas. Those buildings will eventually require expensive retrofits to become carbon neutral. Economically it makes much more sense to get it done right the first time by electrifying new buildings\u2019 cooking, space, and water heating systems.<\/p>\n

We believe the greatest savings come from setting the standard for all-electric NOW, rather than make buildings electric-ready but with gas as an option for now. Placing the gas infrastructure alone adds a lot of money to construction costs. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s wise for the CEC to set a standard that has the potential to raise building costs any more than absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 ASK THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO SUPPORT OREGON\u2019S REJECTION OF THE JORDAN COVE PIPELINE<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We all need to raise our voices to make sure that the Biden administration respects Oregon\u2019s authority to stop Jordan Cove LNG for good.<\/strong> Can you send an email today to tell the Federal government to uphold Oregon\u2019s denial of Jordan Cove LNG? <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

In February 2020, the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development denied the proposed pipeline and export terminal because it would have significant harm on Oregon’s coastal resources and communities. Pembina, the Canadian fossil fuel corporation behind Jordan Cove LNG, has asked the US Secretary of Commerce to overturn Oregon\u2019s permit denial. The deadline for this decision is Tuesday, February 9th.<\/p>\n

We are only a few weeks into 2021 and today we’ve announced the inspiring news<\/a> that European banks BNP Paribas Group, Credit Suisse, Rabobank, and ING \u2013 collectively responsible for financing the trade of over $5.5 billion in Amazon oil to the U.S. from 2009 to 2020 \u2013 have committed to immediate exclusion measures on the trading of oil from the Amazon Sacred Headwaters<\/a> of Ecuador!<\/p>\n

Our first targets in this work to pressure important decision-makers are the financial regulatory agency nominees of the new Biden administration. Wall Street firms like JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock, and Citigroup. Amazon Watch and other ally organizations are calling on President Biden<\/a> to use existing regulatory powers to ensure that these firms are on a clear path to limit their financing of fossil fuel and deforestation commodities in time for the crucial U.N. climate conference in Glasgow in November 2021.<\/p>\n
