{"id":51482,"date":"2021-04-17T23:04:33","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T23:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world.350.org\/humboldt\/?p=51482"},"modified":"2024-10-14T22:22:59","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T22:22:59","slug":"april-news-flash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.350.org\/humboldt\/april-news-flash\/","title":{"rendered":"April News Flash!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>350 Humboldt likes to bring people together, and this coming week \u2014 the week of Earth Day \u2014 we&#8217;ve got some big climate events for you to join.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our first in-person event in more than a year comes up on<\/strong> <strong>Friday, April 23.<\/strong> At a safe social distance and masked, we\u2019ll meet at <strong>4:30 PM on the sidewalk in front of Chase Bank in Eureka<\/strong> <strong>(337 F St).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Chase is the largest funder of climate change in the world, lending more than $51 billion dollars to fossil fuel projects in 2020 alone. Our rally will make the point to Chase customers and the public that banking with Chase is banking on disaster.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 100%; max-width: 300px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse3.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP.38fzjrcbr5MD0kmHTQCvnQHaEK%26pid%3DApi&amp;f=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/strong><\/em><strong>We hope you\u2019ll join us<\/strong>, but to be sure we follow county guidelines on public events <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/events\/earth-day-2021-350-humboldt-and-allies-demonstration-and-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we ask that you first register here<\/a>. <\/strong>The rally is limited to 50 people, and when you register you\u2019ll receive further details including advice on sign-making. Then the rally will move three blocks to the County Courthouse where we\u2019ll continue to raise the spirit of Earth Day, which calls on us to do what we can to ditch banks that poison our climate.<\/p>\n<p>Another opportunity for us to join together, this one online, begins on Earth Day itself. 350 Humboldt has joined Cooperation Humboldt to partner with a group of organizations presenting<strong> <em>The Post Capitalism Conference: Building a Solidarity Economy<\/em>, on April 22-25. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The conference offers 21 sessions facilitated by veteran activists, practitioners and scholars. <strong>Panelists include Humboldt State University\u2019s Kaitlin Read <\/strong>along with Rick Wolff (Democracy at Work), Emily Kawano (US Solidarity Economy Network), Chase Iron Eyes (Last Real Indians), Nati Linares (New Economy Coalition), Kali Acuno (Cooperation Jackson), David Korten (Yes! Magazine), Margaret Kimberly (Black Agenda Report), Ramon Tores (Cooperativa Tierra y Libertad) and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eventee.co\/en\/e\/post-capitalism-conference-8356?event_id=8356&amp;event_pin=5186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to register for the free conference.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now for a question: <\/strong>has the sunny weather inspired you to get out for a walk down the street? Oh, you\u2019ve read that Humboldt is California\u2019s most dangerous county for pedestrians and you\u2019d rather stay home and watch YouTube?<\/p>\n<p>None of us should be stuck on the couch because we\u2019re afraid for our safety, but we shouldn\u2019t be stuck having to drive a CO2-belching vehicle either. And <strong>the safer our streets, the more people will bike or walk to work or the store, cutting climate emissions.<\/strong> (Driving is Humboldt\u2019s biggest emissions source.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local governments are preparing an update of the county\u2019s Regional Transportation Plan. <\/strong>Early indications are the update will build on momentum to do some good things: reduce miles driven, make roads safer and less stressful to drive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To get involved<\/strong> <strong>in this process,<\/strong> contact the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/hcaog.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">County Association of Governments<\/a><\/strong>, which is leading the update, or transportation activists at the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/transportationpriorities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coalition for Responsible Transportation Priorities<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, some not-so-good news.<strong> In each of the past two years bills have been introduced to the California Legislature to bring common-sense safety to siting oil and gas wells<\/strong> \u2014 like not drilling next door to hospitals, schools, and houses. This past Tuesday the second of those bills, which also banned fracking, was defeated in a State Senate committee. Like last year\u2019s bill, we can blame Democratic legislators who joined Republicans in defeating these totally reasonable measures. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article\/Editorial-Where-s-California-s-urgency-to-16101792.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See this appropriately scathing editorial from the San Francisco Chronicle.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Luckily we have a local congressman who stands up for the climate and the environment. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.times-standard.com\/2021\/03\/29\/jared-huffman-calls-on-u-s-postal-service-to-reconsider-contract-electrify-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See this on Rep. Jared Huffman\u2019s push for the U.S. Postal Service to take EVs seriously<\/a><\/strong> in replacing their fleet of gas-powered trucks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 100%; max-width: 300px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse2.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP.9ftz9hxNV9i-J95UlY0uzAHaDm%26pid%3DApi&amp;f=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" align=\"left\" \/>Speaking of EVs, if you attended our recent presentation on EV charger access, you\u2019ll be interested to hear that <strong>California\u2019s Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is updating state building codes for EV chargers at new apartments<\/strong> and other multi-unit dwellings. One might think that with Gov.
