Write Letters to Voters in Virginia<\/h2>\n

In the 17 months that 350 Humboldt has had a letter writing group we have sent over 8,480* physical letters, mostly to rouse voters to register or vote. We have also signed innumerable on-line petitions and letters. \u00a0But beyond that we have fun! Please join us for an hour of letter-writing, exchange of information, and a bit of chit chat.<\/p>\n

*Not all of these were written during letter writing hour. During the 2020 election some members of the group spent many hours a week writing.<\/p>\n

The founder of World Letter Writing Day says: Never underestimate the power of writing a letter to someone. We agree. Writing Vote Forward letters \u00a0is a great way to make a powerful connection with a fellow voter and one of the most effective ways to encourage that voter to turn out to vote<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n

Virginia is winnable for Democrats this year, but recent polling shows the races are close. If Republicans win this fall, they will no doubt use a Virginia victory to propel them into the 2022 midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow, we are switching our focus to the next climate champion on our list \u2012 Rodney Willett. A health and education advocate hailing from a family of teachers, Willett has been serving as the Delegate for Virginia\u2019s 40th district since 2020. Since then, his pro-environment votes in the Virginia legislature and his work towards passing the historic Virginia Clean Economy Act have earned him an A rating from the Sierra<\/p>\n

STAND.ORG<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cruise industry is actually trying to legitimize the technology that allows them to continue to burn one of the dirtiest fossil fuels on earth – heavy fuel oil – by \u2018scrubbing\u2019 the exhaust and discharging the toxin-laden wastewater directly into the ocean. But we have an opportunity to fight this skewed narrative.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Coast Guard has opened a public comment period asking for public feedback on how to combat the climate emergency. If hundreds of our rad community members submit comments pushing back against the cruise industry\u2019s dangerous misinformation campaign, we can make sure scrubbers are known for what it is and not some miracle technology. But we only have a small window to get it done. The comment period ends tomorrow, October 6th.<\/p>\n

Click here to go to the U.S. Coast Guard\u2019s page and select the \u201cSubmit a Formal Comment\u201d button to tell the Coast Guard that scrubbers have no place in programs, regulations, and policies for addressing climate change.<\/a><\/p>\n

STOP LINE 3<\/h2>\n

The completion of the Line 3 tar sands pipeline can be stopped by the White House. In granting pipeline permits to Enbridge, President Biden\u2019s predecessor waived any requirement of an Environmental Impact Statement — in other words, he declared that the federal government will approve the pipeline\u2019s construction without considering the environmental harms it will cause. President Biden can and should demand a full audit, for the sake of our land and our health.<\/p>\n

Starting next Monday, thousands of people will participate in civil disobedience at the White House to demand that President Biden choose a side: People vs. Fossil Fuels<\/a>. On Tuesday, October 12th, we\u2019ll deliver the final petition demanding a full Environmental Impact Statement.
