\u201c350 Humboldt would like to acknowledge that where we live and hold our meetings in Humboldt County is on unceded territory and the ancestral homeland of indigenous nations which include Tolowa, Hupa, Karuk, Mattole, Wailaki, Wiyot, and Yurok.<\/p>\n

We thank indigenous nations who have been caretakers of the land. Additionally, we recognize that the well-being of all people is bound up with that of indigenous peoples, and we must all<\/em> take action on the climate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our action this month is to help create the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. Right now, the 156 miles of California\u2019s central coast is the only unprotected piece of a delicate marine ecosystem spanning from Mendocino County in northern California to the Channel Islands off Santa Barbara. Securing protections for the Chumash sanctuary would be a huge win for the wildlife that depend on the ecosystem. It would prevent dirty oil and gas drilling projects from starting up in the middle of an essential wildlife migration route.<\/p>\n

Main discussion: \u00a0 We are going to try an experiment that is taken from an actual experiment in Japan. In 2015 some citizens of Yahaba, Japan were randomly divided into two groups, one representing the current generation and the other representing the generation of 2060. Their assignment: discuss the administration of Yahaba\u2019s water utility administration, specifically whether a one-time budget surplus should be returned to current rate-payers or invested in upgrading the water works. After we do our experiment, we\u2019ll tell you how it worked out in Yahaba.<\/p>\n

Our experiment concerns expenditure of funds to deal with sea level rise around the Humboldt Bay. Here is a map from Aldaran Laird showing the new coastline with 2 meters of sea level rise.<\/p>\n\n
