Big week! On Thursday at 6pm the Planning Commission will hear the permit application by Nordic Aquafarms. We hope you will write a letter (due by noon Wednesday) and speak at the public hearing. \u00a0Below is information on attending via zoom or phone. If writing a letter, send it by email to: <\/strong>Planningclerk@co.humboldt.ca.us<\/strong> \u00a0 Include: “<\/strong>Pertaining to the Planning Commission hearing to be held July 28, 2022 for Nordic Aquafarms California, LLC, Record Number PLN-2020-16698.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

HOW TO LISTEN OR WATCH THE PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING: Listen or Watch the live stream of the Planning Commission Meeting in three ways:<\/p>\n

1. https:\/\/zoom.us\/j\/83919694648 Password: 238970 \u00a0To raise your hand click the Raise Hand icon on the bottom of the Zoom window. When you click the Raise Hand icon, a hand icon will appear next to your name that will notify the host your hand is raised.
\n2. Call in via telephone at 346-248-7799, enter meeting ID 839 1969 4648 Password: 238970. When the Planning Commissioner starts to discuss the item you wish to comment on, Press *9 to raise your hand. When you are called upon to speak, you will be prompted to unmute your mic, press *6 to unmute.<\/p>\n

3. In Person: Any person may appear and present testimony in regard to this matter at the hearing located in the Board of Supervisors’ Chamber, Humboldt County Courthouse, 825 Fifth Street, Eureka, California. The Planning Commission needs 15 COPIES of any materials submitted at the meeting.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong>The 100,000 or more metric tons of greenhouse gases that will be emitted annually by the fish feed<\/strong><\/p>\n

4. \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong>The fact that Humboldt Bay already has local sustainable aquaculture in the form of our oyster farms<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong>Risks: Tsunami, earthquake, fish escape<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over three years ago we realized that pressuring Trans Mountain\u2019s insurers to cut ties with this toxic project could be one of our best strategies for stopping it (and all expansion of the polluting tar sands) once and for all.<\/p>\n

Eighteen insurers and counting have since caved to our collective pressure and dropped Trans Mountain,<\/strong> but there are still some companies (looking at you Liberty Mutual) providing the coverage the project needs to proceed.<\/p>\n

Daniel, the remaining insurance companies must now decide again whether or not to renew their contracts with Trans Mountain on August 31st,<\/strong> which gives us just over a month to pressure them to back out.<\/p>\n

This postcard program focuses on the fact that Senate candidates John Fetterman (D-PA) and Cheri Beasley (D-NC), as well as our CA House candidates, will vote to protect reproductive rights, while Republicans are pushing a nationwide abortion ban.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll be sending postcards to environmental voters who voted in the 2020 General Election, but are unlikely<\/em> to vote in midterm elections based on their previous voting history. We expect to begin mailing out packages of postcards to signed-up volunteers beginning in late March, and the required \u201cmail-to-voters\u201d date for this round of postcards is on Monday, June 6th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

I am administering a postcarding network in Humboldt County (presently over 300 writers) and we supply postcards and stamps to writers, which are available for cost at several convenient pickup locations. We mostly postcard for ROV (Reclaim Our Vote), which is non-partisan, but have also postcarded for Activate America (which used to be called Flip the West), which is partisan.<\/p>\n
