Land Acknowledgement: \u201c350 Humboldt would like to acknowledge that where we live and hold our meetings in Humboldt County is on unceded territory and the ancestral homeland of indigenous nations which include Tolowa, Hupa, Karuk, Mattole, Wailaki, Wiyot, and Yurok.<\/p>\n

We thank indigenous nations who have been caretakers of the land. Additionally, we recognize that the well-being of all people is bound up with that of indigenous peoples, and we must all<\/em> take action on the climate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus we are compelled to stand with the Yurok Tribe as they fight to preserve the salmon in the Klamath river. We will write to Jim Wood, Mike McGuire and Jared Huffman asking for state and federal assistance in this water rights fight, which is exacerbated by climate change and drought and we will donate to support the Yurok Tribe in this fight. (See article appended.)<\/p>\n

Plastic all around us,

\nBut what are we to do with it
\nwhen we are done?<\/p>\n

Put it in the ocean.
\nPut it in the sea.
\nPut it in the food we eat.
\nPut it into me.<\/p>\n

Clean and durable.
\nThat\u2019s fantastic!
\nCheap and sturdy.
\nBuy more plastic!<\/p>\n

Throw it in the landfills.
\nThrow it in the sea.
\nThrow it in the garbage.
\nIt\u2019s all the same to me.<\/p>\n

Household goods unbreakable
\nmade from plastic!
\nTableware disposable
\nthat\u2019s fantastic!<\/p>\n

Straws and food wraps, bottle caps
\nPlastic bottles, grocery bags,
\nCigarette butts with plastic fibers,
\nFurniture and clothing tags<\/p>\n

Plastic. Plastic.
\nMountains of plastic.
\nMaybe not a good idea?
\nMaybe not fantastic?<\/p>\n

Killing turtles, dolphins, fish,
\nOceans filling with debris
\nWhat about our own entrapment,
\nPlastic killing you and me?<\/p>\n

Plastic all around us,

I splice the mountain, its body and mouth gaping.
\nI collect rainwater in a wheelbarrow.<\/p>\n

I line the whale\u2019s belly with gifts until
\nthey rupture its stomach.
\nI water the strawberries.<\/p>\n

Again I fill my gas tank with dead things,
\ngenerations spun together until shiny.
\nI feed the ducks fresh lettuce.<\/p>\n

I maneuver the dead squirrel
\non the road, mark the moment
\nwhen creature becomes meat.<\/p>\n

I accept that my love is a
\npoisonous flower, routinely fatal.<\/p>\n

I calculate the force of
\nloving in each glittering death.<\/p>\n

All day on this land, in the
\ndeep forest, the electric greens and
\nstill-wet mud writhe with life.<\/p>\n

The pond gurgles and whispers.
\nEveryone here knows to shudder
\nwhen they see me coming.<\/p>\n

The mangos arrive unbruised
\nat the grocery store.
