The LookOut is a
\nmonthly review of climate issues and recent developments in our
\nneighborhood.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In solidarity
\nwith the international youth movement<\/strong>, Fridays For Future<\/a>,
\n350 Humboldt organized a climate rally that took place Friday,
\nSeptember 23, on the Arcata Plaza. On that day people all over the
\nworld went on strike, marched and protested the astonishing
\ninadequacy of attention paid to climate change.<\/p>\n

This annual event is
\nan outgrowth of the FFF movement that organizes Friday strikes
\nthroughout the year and all over the world. It was started by one
\nfifteen-year-old, Greta Thunberg, skipping school and picketing the
\nSwedish parliament. In 2019 there was a Global Week For Future<\/a>
\nduring which four million to seven million people all over the world
\nparticipated in 4,500 actions.<\/p>\n

So far that was the
\npeak of activity–probably because of the pandemic. The Guardian estimates<\/a> worldwide participation in this year’s Friday events to
\ntotal in the thousands. The biggest event took place in Berlin with
\nan estimated 20,000 strikers and demonstrators.<\/p>\n

Here in Humboldt 75
\nto 100 people gathered at the Arcata Plaza<\/a> to hear speakers,
\nincluding students from North Coast Preparatory Academy and Humboldt Cal Poly. Topics included climate justice,
\nenvironmental stewardship, and the Nordic Aquafarm appeal.
\nAfterwards, accompanied by a four-piece band, participants paraded
\naround the plaza.<\/p>\n

Humboldt county
\nmay opt to convert its food waste into bio-gas<\/strong> instead of
\ncompost. At a joint meeting of the Solid Waste Local Task Force and
\nHumboldt Waste Management on September 29, Evan Edgar, the consultant
\nhired by the county to usher it into compliance with state law, 1383<\/a>, said that building a composting facility would take too
\nlong.<\/p>\n

Turning food waste
\ninto bio-gas would allow the county to comply with SB 1383 much
\nsooner because Miranda Dairy in Ferndale is already setting up a
\nco-digester that will run on both cow manure and food waste. It needs
\na hundred tons of food waste per day to operate. Fortuitously or not, that is roughly the
\nsame estimated amount that county collection would provide.<\/p>\n

One big potential
\nproblem with the operation at Miranda Dairy could be caused by the de-packaging machine<\/a> it plans to deploy. Bio-digesters need food slurry
\nas their feedstock. With a de-packager, you can toss packaged foods
\ninto the hopper, making slurrification fast and easy. However,
\nstudies have shown that de-packagers create micro-plastics that
\nbecome part of the soil. Edgar Evans says the machine built by Scott
\ndoes not create micro-plastics.<\/p>\n

The Board of
\nSupervisors denied our appeal<\/strong> of the Planning Commission’s
\ndecision to certify Nordic Aquafarms<\/a>‘<\/u> Final Environmental
\nImpact Report. Co-appellants 350 Humboldt, Redwood Audubon Society,
\nand Humboldt Fisherman’s Marketing Association had thirty minutes on
\nSeptember 28 to make their case.<\/p>\n

Other agencies,
\nincluding the Coastal Commission and California Fish and Wildlife,
\nwill re-address some of the appeal’s ecological concerns–such as the
\nproject’s intake of water from the bay and its outtake into the
\nocean. However, the Board of Supervisors meeting was 350 Humboldt’s
\nlast chance to draw attention to the <\/u>under-counting<\/a> of the
\nproject’s GHG emissions in its Environmental Impact Report.<\/p>\n

A concession from
\nNordic addressed the concerns of those who called for either a
\nsmaller facility or a facility built in stages. Nordic agreed that
\nthe building permit for phase two of its project would depend on the
\nsuccess of phase one. All of the support buildings and an unspecified
\nnumber of holding tank modules would be built first. The rest of the
\ntank modules would be added after the operation is running smoothly
\nand in full compliance with all of the environmental regulations.<\/p>\n

After much prodding from Supervisor Wilson<\/a> about the need for Nordic to de-carbonize,
\nthe corporation agreed to publish a yearly sustainability report and
\nhold a public forum about possible ways to reduce the emissions of
\nfish food and transport–two of 350 Humboldt’s complaints. In
\naddition, Nordic will provide $25,000 per year to finance local
\nsustainability projects.<\/p>\n
