Thank you to all of you who have been postcarding with us in the lead up to the April 4th election to determine the future of the Wisconsin State Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

It might be the most important election of 2023, but don\u2019t take our word for it. Here\u2019s what the New York Times<\/a> has to say:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 10 weeks, Wisconsin will hold an election that carries bigger policy stakes than any other contest in America in 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe April race, for a seat on the state\u2019s evenly divided Supreme Court, will determine the fate of abortion rights, gerrymandered legislative maps and the Wisconsin governor\u2019s appointment powers \u2014 and perhaps even influence the state\u2019s 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe court\u2019s importance stems from Wisconsin\u2019s deadlocked state government. Since 2019, Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, has faced off against a Republican-controlled Legislature with near-supermajority control thanks to one of the country\u2019s most aggressive partisan gerrymanders<\/a>, itself approved last year by the Wisconsin justices.<\/p>\n

\u201cArguably the most important election in America in 2023 is the April 4 contest for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The winner will determine whether conservatives or liberals hold a 4-to-3 majority in a critical presidential battleground state.<\/p>\n

“Wisconsin Democrats want to overturn the state\u2019s 1849 law prohibiting abortion in nearly all cases and end an aggressive legislative gerrymander drawn by Republicans. This election is liberals\u2019 last chance for a while; if conservatives win the seat, they will hold a majority on the court until at least 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oil and Gas Action Network<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re demanding<\/a> that CalGEM\u2019s next leader commit to protecting public health and phasing out toxic oil and gas extraction \u2014 just as Gov. Newsom has pledged. Specifically, we\u2019re calling for the new head of CalGEM to commit to four actions to protect Californians\u2019 health and safety:<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0 \u00a0 Continue CalGEM\u2019s long-delayed public health and safety rulemaking to permanently establish a 3,200 ft setback statewide and reject all new permits within the setback zone while the rulemaking process moves forward.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0 \u00a0 Stop issuing permits for new oil and gas drilling statewide.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0 \u00a0 Hold the industry responsible for the nearly $12 billion cost of cleaning up idle and orphaned wells across our state \u2014 many of which are leaking and poisoning our communities.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0 \u00a0 Address the legacy of environmental injustice in Black, Brown and low-income communities across California \u2014 specifically with regard to oil extraction \u2014 and commit to remediating public health impacts in those communities.<\/p>\n

The EPA’s updated draft rule improves upon many of the standards in the original draft rule released by EPA last year, including requiring regular inspections at all well sites, but it does not go far enough \u2013 especially on key issues like the wasteful and dangerous practice of routine flaring.<\/p>\n

By signing our public comment, you let EPA know that routine flaring is unacceptable, not only for our health but also for our economy.<\/p>\n

We need the Biden administration to use all of its authority to quickly enact strong solutions for pollution to meet the president\u2019s climate, public health, and justice commitments.<\/p>\n
