February 17 was the last day for legislators to introduce bills. There are some very important climate bills! We want to tell you how to write a letter of support that goes to each of the committees the bill will be heard in as it moves through the first house. Your letter is also sent to the author.<\/p>\n

Please follow along on your computer\/device.<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0 \u00a0 Create an account at the California Legislature Position Letter Portal<\/a>. It should be your individual account not one for 350 Humboldt. However, if you are an authorized representative of some other group, you can sign up for it at the same time you sign for yourself.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0 \u00a0 Look up important climate bills using the Climate Center Bill Tracker<\/a>. Later on the 350 Humboldt Legislative Committee will develop its own list of bills it supports, but the Climate Center is a good resource and has paid staff to keep track of bills. You might, for example, use the bill tracker to see which bills the Climate Center is sponsoring<\/em>. The second bill on this list is SB 12 (Stern). \u00a0This is probably the most important bill of the session. It changes the 40% reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in California by 2030 to 55% — thus putting us in the position the IPCC says all countries need to be in by 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n

3. \u00a0 \u00a0 Choose a bill to write about. Unless you are particularly interested in another one, perhaps start with a letter about SB 12 (Stern). If you see a statement that a particular bill is a \u201cspot\u201d bill it means this isn\u2019t the real bill but just something put into hold a spot for the real bill, which will be introduced soon. \u00a0Senator McGuire, for example, has a couple of spot bills in the Climate Center list.<\/p>\n
