350.org is asking us to support the Pine Tree Power Ballot Initiative. This one is definitely worth a little bit of your time!<\/p>\n

What you need to know about the Pine Tree Power Ballot Initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n

This initiative is on the ballot in Maine and, if passed, would create a consumer-owned non-profit utility that would replace the state\u2019s two largest utility companies \u2014 Central Maine Power (CMP) and Versant. For years, CMP has been voted the worst utility in the nation, with a record number of shut-offs due to their incredibly high rates. They are also one of the biggest anti-climate lobbyists in the state.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Maine, home heating and car emissions are responsible for the highest percentage of carbon emissions. By replacing these utility companies with community-owned Pine Tree Power Company, we would be able to save money and remove barriers to dramatically reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n

Because this is a statewide initiative, this would be the largest transition to a publicly-owned utility model on record. By securing this victory, we\u2019ll be setting the stage for even more states to follow Maine\u2019s example and place control over utilities \u2014 and the transition to renewables \u2014 into our communities\u2019 hands.<\/p>\n

VOTE FORWARD – New program in Ohio<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re writing to young, Democratic-leaning women in Ohio to encourage them to vote in the August special election. Ohioans will be voting whether or not to raise the threshold required to pass citizen-led ballot measures from a simple majority to 60%\u2014meaning a future measure could be blocked by a minority, even if it\u2019s supported by a majority of Ohioans.<\/p>\n

The possible impacts of this anti-democratic effort to raise the vote threshold for citizen-led constitutional amendments in Ohio\u2014including on issues like abortion access and fair maps\u2014are far-reaching. Read more about why we\u2019ve launched this campaign on our website.<\/a><\/p>\n

POSTCARDS TO SWING STATES — New program for fall elections<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Virginia, we’ll write to rally Democrats to vote in 42 competitive state legislative districts this November. Democrats hold a narrow majority in the state Senate and Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House of Delegates. In Kentucky, our postcards will help Democratic Governor Andy Beshear win re-election in November.<\/p>\n

You’ll need to provide your own postcards and stamps for this program<\/strong>. We recommend progressivepostcards<\/a>, an online store that sells postcards with several of our designs for less than most sellers. After you sign up, we’ll email you a list of voters and instructions, which will include an October mailing date and three short message options.<\/p>\n
