Burning wood
\nproduces a lot of heat, smoke, air pollution, and carbon. One thing
\nit doesn\u2019t produce is clean energy. But incinerated biomass
\nelectricity forms 40% of Redwood Coast Energy Authority\u2019s renewable
\nenergy portfolio despite growing local opposition. Sixteen local
\norganizations\u2014environmental, health, political, and social–have
\nnow formed a coalition to protest this type of biomass electricity.
\nWe thought RCEA was beginning to hear us.<\/p>\n

So we\u2019re a little
\nstunned to find out that RCEA now proposes to give Humboldt Sawmill\u2019s
\nbiomass plant in Scotia even more money. The plant won\u2019t produce
\nmore electricity in return. It is just receiving \u201ccredit\u201d for the
\npower it already generates for its own needs. \u201cRenewable Energy
\nCertificates\u201d sold to RCEA represent this credit.<\/p>\n

Please tell RCEA to
\nNOT<\/strong> buy Renewable Energy Certificates from Humboldt Sawmill
\nCompany. That money should go for real Renewable Energy\u2014solar,
\nwind, battery storage, and geothermal.<\/p>\n

The biomass plant
\nrepeatedly violates the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, plus it emits
\nmore carbon than coal, fanning the flames of climate crisis.
\nSupporting incinerated biomass electricity means less support for
\nreal solutions. And Humboldt Sawmill will never develop alternative ways
\nof dealing with its woody waste as long as RCEA keeps supplying it
\nwith dollars.<\/p>\n

The
\ndecision will be made at the RCEA meeting on Thursday, August 24 at
\n3:30.<\/p>\n
