Coming at a key juncture for Biden, who is locked in a tight race with former President Donald Trump, the document lends a sharp contrast between the tough regulations proposed by the Democrat and his Republican opponent&#8217;s campaign pledge to tear down the administrative state.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In a Rare Court Action, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/08072024\/multnomah-county-oregon-lawsuit-against-fossil-fuel-industry-for-heat-dome\/\">an Oregon County Seeks to Hold Fossil Fuel Companies Accountable for Extreme Temperatures.<\/a> <\/strong>Multnomah County recorded its highest-ever temperatures during heat dome conditions in 2021 that killed 69 people. Temperatures were so hot that the metal on cable cars melted and the asphalt on roadways buckled. Nearly half the homes in the county lacked cooling systems because of Oregon\u2019s typically gentle summers, where average highs top out at 81 degrees. Sixty-nine people perished from heat stroke, most of them in their homes. When scientific studies showed that the extreme temperatures were caused by heat domes, which experts say are influenced by climate change, county officials didn\u2019t just chalk it up to a random weather occurrence.<strong> \u201cThis catastrophe was not caused by an act of God,\u201d said Jeffrey B. Simon, a lawyer for the county, \u201cbut rather by several of the world\u2019s largest energy companies playing God with the lives of innocent and vulnerable people by selling as much oil and gas as they could.\u201d<\/strong> Now, 11 months after the suit was filed, Multnomah County is preparing to move forward with the case in Oregon state court after a federal judge in June settled a These milestones mark changes in the historic trajectory of change, and include peak greenhouse gas emissions, peak greenhouse gas concentration, deceleration of warming, net-zero emissions, and a transition to global cooling.<\/strong> However, given internal variability in the Earth system and measurement uncertainty, definitively saying that a milestone has passed requires rigour.
