Since we can\u2019t meet, we\u2019re trying to keep in touch with this News<\/span> Flash<\/span><\/i>.<\/b> Coronavirus news<\/span> can get old, so here are a few things you might find different and worthwhile.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, good things still happen in a pandemic.<\/b> Our last News<\/span> Flash<\/span><\/i> reported on the trend toward dramatically lower carbon emissions in China in recent months. Now, research by the Netherlands Meteorological Institute and reported by the BBC<\/a> shows this is probably also occurring in Europe. Satellite images show sharp declines in nitrous oxides which generally rise and fall with carbon emissions.<\/b> Though the trend will likely end with the pandemic, we can hope that people will get hooked on something unusual \u2014 clean air \u2014 and demand an economy that doesn\u2019t rely on killing the planet.<\/p>\n

A bit of local good news<\/span> <\/b>is the continued operation of Humboldt County\u2019s local transit systems. Redwood Transit, running from Scotia to Trinidad seven days a week, now offers free rides to all!<\/b> And the buses get extra cleanings. Many lower-income people in Humboldt rely on buses to get to work, and if they\u2019re still working it\u2019s vital \u2014 both for them and the public \u2014 that they get there.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for good things to do while sheltering in place, <\/b>here\u2019s an online petition<\/a>from Climate Mobilization<\/b> demanding JP Morgan Chase stop funding a gas pipeline <\/b>threatening the homeland of Canada\u2019s Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en people. And here\u2019s a link<\/a> to sign up for Fossil Free California\u2019s free<\/i> webinar \u201cCovid-19 and the Climate Crisis\u201d <\/b>presented by Dan Kammen, who chairs U.C. Berkeley\u2019s Energy and Resources Group, this Tuesday, March 31, 4:30-6:00 PM.<\/p>\n

And in the it-could-have-been-worse department, <\/b>this week Congress passed a two trillion dollar Covid-19 relief package.<\/p>\n

The bill began as a massive bailout for fossil fuel and other giant corporations,<\/b> sweetened with $1,200 checks for most Americans. 350.org<\/a>‘s Tamara Toles O\u2019Laughlin credited <\/b>thousands of 350 members who called Congress <\/b>with the removal of billions in handouts to oil companies and the addition of funds for mass transit. (Click here for more.)<\/a> O\u2019Laughlin still describes parts of the bill a \u201ccorporate bailout fund.\u201d She adds \u201cLet\u2019s learn from the wake up call of this pandemic and act boldly. We must make a down payment on a regenerative economy to prevent future crises.\u201d<\/p>\n
