{"id":254,"date":"2015-01-22T23:05:15","date_gmt":"2015-01-23T09:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/world.350.org\/hawaii\/?p=254"},"modified":"2015-01-22T23:05:55","modified_gmt":"2015-01-23T09:05:55","slug":"another-big-step-toward-divestment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/world.350.org\/hawaii\/?p=254","title":{"rendered":"Another Big Step Toward Divestment!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today the full Board of Regents of UH voted on whether to approve their Budget and Finance Committee\u2019s proposal of a task group which would\u00a0look into divesting and review the university\u2019s investment and sustainability policies.<\/p>\n<p>Chair Moore had asked us to minimize written testimony, so DivestUH had just two speakers. \u00a0Dr. John Webster spoke about financial evidence and\u00a0<span>financial <\/span>arguments from three sources, including UH\u2019s own investment manager; about integrating the sustainability that UH teaches into its portfolio; and about doing the right thing. \u00a0Dr. Mark Hixon spoke about the science, the\u00a0emotional loss, the economic and social costs,\u00a0and the documented effects on Hawaii (past and\u00a0projected). \u00a0Both emphasized divestment\u2019s symbolic value. A\u00a0good\u00a050 people turned out to raise their hands in support, at Mark\u2019s prompting\u2014a fitting exclamation point to everyone\u2019s efforts. \u00a0Mahalo nui loa to everyone who took time to come.<\/p>\n<p>Regent Sullivan summarized the testimony from the last meeting, mentioned our 1,330 signatures and announced who would be in the task group: \u00a0Joe, Doorae and Leilei (all DivestUHers); Regents Nielsen, Tagorda, Matayoshi and Sullivan; and administrators to be named later. \u00a0Recommendations on divestment would be due April 30; recommendations on sustainability practices would be due June\u00a030.<\/p>\n<p>And then, all 15 regents\u00a0voted to approve\u00a0the task group, with no dissent. \u00a0Actual divestment still requires several more steps, but at this point it could not look better.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today the full Board of Regents of UH voted on whether to approve their Budget and Finance Committee\u2019s proposal of a task group which would\u00a0look into divesting and review the university\u2019s investment and sustainability policies.
